Doug Unger volunteers with the Georgia Department of Corrections through the Kairos Prison Ministry, a Christian based ministry that addresses the spiritual needs of incarcerated men, women, youth, and their families. Mr. Unger began volunteering in the mid 1990’s at Lee State Prison. In 2015, he became the State Chairman for Kairos of Georgia, which is comprised of more than 3,000 volunteers and is held in 30 prisons throughout the state.

Mr. Unger became involved with the prison ministry because “he had some very close friends that were volunteering and asked him to go with them” and needless to say, he has been going ever since. He enjoys being able to share how Christ has changed his life, and how embracing Christ can enrich the lives of others. Doug says that he is better person for sharing his life with the offenders in prison and what they share with him. Many times, Kairos Ministry is referred to as the “cookie ministry” and that is a way of sharing the good part of life and demonstrating God’s love not only for the offenders, but also staff.

These last few years as Kairos of Georgia State Chairman, Unger says it has been an honor and privilege to work with all levels of leadership within the Georgia Department of Corrections. Meeting wardens, chaplains, and administrators has led him to better understand what can and is accomplished through a common goal of caring for those that are incarcerated. Doug stated, that, “working together makes life better for all.”

Often volunteers are not prepared to walk behind the walls and Kairos offers an alternative for those that would like to volunteer, but just can’t go thru the gate. Kairos Outside provides the same ministry for the families of the incarcerated as it does those inside, which is a weekend filled with God’s love, continued support, and understanding.
