Causes of Manual Handling Injuries:

1. Lifting heavy loads without bending the knees

properly.

2. Using excessive force and arching your back.

3. Repeated handling of heavy loads.

4. Poor posture and twisting when handling loads.

5. Handling loads in poor working environments, for

example walk ways not being kept clear.

Tips to try and avoid Manual Handling injuries:

1. Making sure walkways are clear of any obstructions to avoid trips

and falls.

2. Avoid handling heavy loads whenever possible.

3. Use things that are provided to help such as trolleys when deliveries come in to the stockroom.

4. Report any concerns you may have, if you see something you think

might cause harm to other staff or customers.

5. Ask for help and break down heavy loads into smaller sections.

6. Bend your knees properly so your back doesn’t arch and damage.
