On Saturday, September 16, 2017, Seventy five MRI technologists gathered for the 5th Annual MRI Staff Meeting! This once-a-year mandatory meeting is held on a Saturday each September. It begins with a delicious breakfast and gives the staff the opportunity to catch up with both old and new friends. MRI is a department spread throughout the hospital in eight different locations, operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. With so many different shifts and locations, the annual staff meeting is the only time the entire staff is in the same place at the same time.

This year’s meeting, lead by the Chief Technologists and Technical Educators, began by introducing and welcoming the new employees that have joined the department throughout the past year. We are excited to have Tiffany Painter, D'Angelo Coleman, Jessica Roscoe, Marvin Pedron, Gi Young Kang, Britta Nyland, and Maria Haywood as part of our team! Best of luck to all of you as you begin your Johns Hopkins journey!

As our department continues to grow and thrive, we must remember our department mission statement. "A driven team of professional and highly skilled technologists empowered to provide exceptional image quality and world class patient care, all while prioritizing patient safety". In order to provide the best possible patient care, we as technologists must remember to first take care of ourselves. This year’s meeting provided several wellness updates and even a fun fitness break that included a tabata workout.

The Technical Imaging Educators discussed the many exciting updates and upgrades at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Imaging sites.

An overview of the CE Educational seminars and the MRI department QI project were presented. Michelle Casler and Kimberly Francis discussed the QI Lightening project that investigated the many reasons that an inpatient MRI order may not be completed within 24-48 hours. This project helped to improve the inpatient MRI workflow, and work toward accomplishing the MRI inpatient imperative.

Always the most exciting part of the Annual Meeting is the presentation of the ROAR Award! ROAR is an acronym for “Reach Out And Recognize”. Several months before the meeting, employees are asked to nominate a fellow employee who they feel consistently goes above and beyond their everyday job responsibilities. These nominations are reviewed by a committee of fellow technologists and a winner is decided. Congratulations to all of the nominees... Angela Keith, Shardae Jackson, Blake Engberg, Darlene Toffry, Rose Butts, Christina Chesley, Kimberly Francis and Tiffany Painter! Dr Ihab Kamel, MRI Clinical Director, joined us to officially announce this year’s winner! A huge and well deserved congratulations to Darlene Toffry! Darlene is a model technologist, coworker and friend. She is always willing to lend an extra hand, she is a wealth of knowledge and she loves to teach and guide students and new employees. Darlene's name will be added to the ROAR Award plaque located in the Zayed 4 MRI department. Darlene will also get the opportunity to attend the Siemens Innovations conference in Las Vegas in April 2018!!! Thank you to the ROAR award committee and to all those who took the time to write nomination letters!

The meeting ended with departmental highlights from each of the chief technologists. We also took a moment to remember a friend and coworker who we lost very suddenly this past year. Trisha lived a beautiful life! Her contagious smile, laugh, and silly sayings "Trish-isms" are remembered fondly and talked about often! Trisha's life and story remind us all to live life to the fullest, take that trip, eat the cake, and cheer loudly for your favorite team, whether it be professional hockey or football, or an amazing group of co-workers who lift and empower each other every single day! Trisha-we hope we are making you proud!

As always, this was a very informative meeting and we look forward to next year when we will be together again!
