AUTONOMOUS HAULAGE
Q Likewise, with regard to fixed charging of battery trucks- what about the actual scheduling of the truck to charge at a certain threshold, plus the autonomous route of the truck to and from the charging point or area- where are we today with this having been tested or becoming a reality?
As battery-electric haulage progresses, charging strategy becomes part of the overall production system, not a standalone activity. For autonomy, the opportunity is to help customers manage when a truck should charge, how it is routed to and from the charging area, and how charging events are coordinated with production requirements, dispatching priorities, energy availability and site constraints. Komatsu is actively considering these requirements as part of our broader autonomy and electrification roadmap. The same principles that guide autonomous haulage, predictable routing, system-level optimisation, safe interactions and customer-specific configuration, will be important for charging workflows. While specific customer deployments and timelines will vary, our focus is on developing practical solutions that integrate charging into the mine plan rather than treating it as an interruption to production.
Q How does the AHS strategy evolve together with the Power Agnostic roadmap- is the plan that all Power Agnostic trucks will be available with full automation and is this factored into the development plans and timelines for each as they are rolled out?
Komatsu’ s Power Agnostic roadmap and autonomy roadmap are closely connected. The Power Agnostic platform is designed to give customers flexibility as they transition across energy sources, including diesel, trolley, battery and other future power options, depending on their site requirements and decarbonisation plans. Autonomy is being considered as part of that long-term development pathway because customers need future haulage systems that can deliver productivity, safety and sustainability together. The intent is to develop solutions that allow customers to adopt new power technologies without losing the operational benefits they expect from autonomous haulage. As each Power Agnostic configuration advances, including the Power Agnostic Battery Truck, Komatsu will evaluate automation requirements, integration needs, infrastructure interfaces and customer readiness as part of the development process. Our goal is to provide flexible, scalable solutions that help customers move toward lower-emission operations while maintaining the performance and reliability required in production mining.
Q In 2025 you began a partnership with Applied Intuition, plus last year announced you were working with Ouster on using their latest 3D LiDAR. How do these developments relate to the next generation of FrontRunner AHS?
Komatsu’ s partnerships with Applied Intuition and Ouster are important elements of our next-generation autonomy strategy. With Applied Intuition, we are co-developing a software-defined vehicle and autonomy platform intended to support continuous feature delivery, flexible autonomy capabilities and more adaptive machine intelligence across future mining equipment. With Ouster, we are incorporating advanced 3D lidar technology to support improved perception, detection, navigation and collision avoidance in demanding mining environments. Together, these efforts are helping us build toward a future where autonomous mining equipment can better understand and adapt to dynamic site conditions, support more efficient interaction with other equipment, and unlock new levels of productivity over the life of the asset. Our approach is to validate new capabilities carefully and in close collaboration with customers, because reliability, safety and operational value must come first in production mining environments.
