Twenty years ago, in the first issue of International Mining( a reincarnation in itself), Editor and Publisher, John Chadwick, spelled out an ambition that is as important today as it was two decades ago.
“ IM’ s aim is always to pass on useful practical knowledge and experience through its editorial,” he wrote.
From site visits detailing the specific fleet or processing setups individual mine sites have, to in-depth features on prominent segments of the industry, to High Profile Q & As with industry leaders, obtaining and distributing practical knowledge is part and parcel of what we continue to do here.
There are a number of examples in this issue – take a look at the options Anglo American, Redpath Deilmann and Herrenknecht are looking to use on the Shaft Boring Roadheader to cut through more than 100 MPa rock at the Woodsmith project in the UK in our annual Shaft Sinking focus, or the process Newmont employed to successfully rescue three trapped workers at the Red Chris mine in Canada in the Mine Rescue and Safety feature.
The avenues we employ to achieve this have changed drastically over the last 20 years. The print magazine continues to be requested – and read – by thousands, but the importance of our website, webinars, video interviews and social media posts grow with every passing month.
This evolving backdrop has changed the way we do business, but our commitment to get out of our Berkhamsted office and meet the change makers at industry events and mine site visits remains strong. In the final months of 2025, for instance, we are planning visits to three different continents where we hope to take in at least one mine site during each trip.
Our pledge to make physical connections is further reinforced by our sister events group, International Mining Events, whose flagship conference, The Electric Mine, showcases realworld implementations of fleet electrification projects across mining operations at an annual in-person gathering – the next one being in Lisbon, Portugal, in May.
It takes a lot of work to achieve this and ensure we reach the high standards that John set back in 2005. The reason we can meet these is down to our team – one that is a lot smaller than many readers assume.
From Kate, able to spot a typo from 100 yards away; to Emma, our event distribution deal maker; to Jane, our magazine circulation guru; to Nicola, our number and accounts whizz; to Phil, our enduring and engaging sales impresario; to Jo, our marketing visionary( she came up with the original Electric Mine logo); to Luke, our new magazine layout luminary; we continue to punch well above our weight when it comes to making an impact on the B2B mining technology world.
Our growing events team – Fern and Ridhi – are continuing that tradition with their tireless work on producing a world-class global electrification event year after year.
The majority of this team has been with us for several years, bringing continuity that is rare in this industry. We are incredibly proud of this fact – as well as the individuals that have come on this 20-year journey with us.
On our twentieth anniversary edition, I want to thank all the people who have allowed us to achieve this milestone. That starts with our staff( current and former), continues with our advertisers – you have been the lifeblood of our publication, allowing us to go in-depth on the topics that matter – and, of course, ends with you, our readers.
Here’ s to another 20 years of passing on practical knowledge and experience!
