Michelin goes digital with haul road maintenance
Michelin is introducing MICHELIN BETTER HAUL ROAD at MINExpo , a digital solution for monitoring haul road maintenance . IM spoke with Frédéric Marques , Global Business Director for Off Road Solutions and Christel Dubus , Chief Marketing Officer in the same division . “ MICHELIN BETTER HAUL ROAD has been developed in collaboration with three mines worldwide and it consists of a mobile and web solution ”, Dubus said . “ It is designed to help mines maintain safety and legal compliance , increase their teams ’ efficiency and accountability , and prioritise resources & actions through analytics and data-driven insights . By digitally monitoring and evaluating a mine ’ s haul road conditions , information is simultaneously shared across teams to do the right actions at the right time and in the right place .”
Dubus underscores the vital role haul roads conditions analytics play in this new offer . Quick analysis is made possible with the six categories : Surface Conditions , Design Optimised , Legal Compliance , Traffic Management , Environment , and Miscellaneous . These categories enable immediate response and actions of the mine site on potential redesign of haul roads and signage , investment in additional equipment , training of people … helping to optimise operational efficiency and enhance safety .

The installation process of this new digital solution is easy and quick according to Michelin . Tablets can be installed in pick-up trucks or support vehicles such as water trucks , graders , or dozers . Alternatively , incident management can be centralised in dispatch by using only the web application , depending on the mine ' s process and safety rules . In the automatic version that Michelin Mining is developing for deployment in the upcoming months , the RDT will automatically spot the haul road maintenance needed thanks to IA and additional technology . The solution ' s history tracking feature records all mine issues , aiding in identifying areas for improvement .
Michelin also recently deployed several new features for the MICHELIN MEMS 4 tyre pressure monitoring system , adds Marques . The first new add-on is a customised dashboard , that is presented as a time-saving tool that sends automated and customised alarm reports directly to your mailbox , without the need to login into the Michelin environment . With the possibility to adapt filters , designate recipients , and parameter the frequency , Michelin aims at providing a readily actionable resource to their customers for data driven decision-making .
The second add-on called Thermal Capacity identifies the available thermal capacity in tyres , enabling dispatchers to optimise decisionmaking for the entire fleet using tire TKPH estimation for each truck , to reduce downtime , increase productivity and extend tire life , Marques says .
