MINING ENGINES
DEUTZ has taken over the distribution of the mtu engine series 1000-1500 , which are based on three Daimler Truck engine platforms
Daimler Truck engine platforms .
The engines are used in various off-highway applications , including in mining in applications like surface ADT trucks , as well as underground trucks , loaders and drills . In addition , DEUTZ is taking over the service operations for engines already in service .
Earlier in 2023 , DEUTZ entered into a cooperation with Daimler Truck to develop and market medium- and heavy-duty engines ( MDEG and HDEP platforms ) in the off-highway segment , which is scheduled to begin in 2028 . With the agreed takeover of the sales and service operations from Rolls-Royce Power Systems , DEUTZ is now taking over the marketing of the off-highway variants of these engines . In addition , the agreement includes the distribution of the older mtu Classic series ( Daimler Truck engine series OM900 & OM460 ).
“ With the takeover of the sales and service operations from Rolls-Royce Power Systems , we are taking the next major step towards growth in our business with modern internal combustion engines ,” DEUTZ CEO , Dr Sebastian C Schulte , said . “ This is an important element that will help us play an active role in the consolidation of the market .”
The takeover , DEUTZ says , provides further evidence of success in implementing its Dual + strategy , which aims to boost the development of a green product portfolio and , at the same time , optimise and further develop conventional engines . When the strategy was presented in January 2023 , the company announced that it intended to firmly establish DEUTZ among the top three independent drive manufacturers – including through acquisitions and cooperations .
DEUTZ CTO & CSO , Dr Ing Markus Müller , explains : “ With the earlier access to the engine platforms , we can offer existing and potential customers a much better approach for the transition . Customers gain planning security , and we benefit from faster market access .”
The fuel duel
There has been much talk of both dual-fuel options in the engine sector of late , with Caterpillar and Komatsu having signed major agreements with Vale to test dual-fuel haul trucks , powered by a mixture of ethanol and diesel .
One of the leading proponents of this technology is Australia-based Mine Energy Solutions .
The company is focused on delivering reduced emission outcomes to the mining and oil and gas sectors through the provision of advanced dualfuel systems with High Density Compressed Natural Gas ( HDCNG ® ) as the dominant fuel over diesel .
MES ’ HDCNG technology was previously trialled at the New Acland coal mine in Queensland , Australia , with help from New Hope Group and Hastings Deering Group . This saw a Cat 789C haul truck converted from diesel use to dual-fuel operation using natural gas as the dominant fuel through sequential gas injection .
The company has since gone on to work with Thiess , sourcing coal seam gas from coal seams on site in the Bowen Basin of Queensland to fuel trucks in a trial setup . This process allowed the removal of the equivalent B Double diesel deliveries from local highways , according to Mine Energy Solutions .
Thiess reported in its recent 2023 sustainability report that it has successfully converted and trialled a dual-fuel Caterpillar 793F at a mine site in the Bowen Basin , with demonstrated reductions in emissions and diesel consumption . The mining services provider expected to continue dual-fuel trials in 2024 .
Also last year , Mine Energy Solutions agreed to a memorandum of understanding with FLANDERS to collaborate and share their expertise to tackle the mining decarbonisation challenge by deploying dual-fuel technology for mining trucks . IM
