When the worst occurs at mine sites , rescue teams require as much information as possible to navigate these affected areas . The millions of data points available at today ’ s modern mines help this , but the ability to fly drones into the area of interest would further improve the process .
Exyn Technologies , with its autonomous aerial robot system offering , has been pitching this to industry for several years now .

“ Over the years , we have had a lot of requests about telemetry – being able to send a drone / ground-based robot out and gather information from different areas of a mine – and also search & rescue ,” Raffi Jabrayan , VP President of Business Development and Commercial Sales for Exyn , says .
“ Generally , when something unexpected happens in a mine , and you send another team out there to inspect the area , you are putting that team at risk ,” he said . “ Our idea is to send the drone or autonomous vehicle in first , look at the area and feedback on whether to send a team down for further inspection .”
Jabrayan says the company has made it easy for existing customers to use its platform in a variety of applications , mine search & rescue included .
“ One tremendous benefit of the LiDAR-based SLAM algorithm powering the ExynAero and ExynAI is that it can accept a variety of sensor inputs ,” he said . “ So , while it ' s using LiDAR to “ see ” and intelligently navigate its environment , search & rescue teams can also attach gas sensors to overlay atmospheric information directly onto a 3D point cloud for peak situational awareness for first responders .
