Derrick SuperStack delivers in India
ArcelorMittal , a multinational steel manufacturing corporation , partnered with Nippon Steel to acquire Essar Steel ’ s Indian iron ore assets . With operations in Dabuna , Odisha , India , ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel ( AM / NS India ) manage a 253 km long continuous iron ore slurry pipeline , one of Asia ’ s longest , connecting the Dabuna beneficiation plant to the Paradeep pellet plant . AM / NS India is committed to advancement with sustainability and envisions creating ‘ Smarter Steels , Brighter Futures .’
AM / NS India desired to increase the beneficiation plant capacity from 8 Mt / y to 12 Mt / y . The existing hydrocyclone-based classification system was one of the bottlenecks , which was inefficient in producing the desired product , particularly with too much ultrafines and coarse particles . The ultrafines negatively affect the final iron ore pellet quality and limit the grinding capacity , while the coarse particles may cause excessive wear and premature failing of their 253 km long continuous iron ore slurry pipeline .
AM / NS India sought a better classification solution to reduce the generation of ultra fines ( - 45 micron ) in the ball mill grinding circuit , reduce the amount of + 150 micron particles to ensure the protection of the slurry pipeline and improve the Blaine number of the concentrate slurry .
Derrick Corp ’ s SuperStack , equipped with innovative Front-to-Back screen panels , offered a safe , environment-friendly , and efficient option for meeting AM / NS India ’ s stringent requirements . Through comprehensive lab testing and third-party verification , Derrick ’ s technology it says demonstrated exceptional capabilities . Derrick swiftly delivered and installed ten SuperStack machines . “ The implementation yielded remarkable outcomes , including up to a 15 % increase in mill capacity , improved pellet quality , and enhanced pipeline protection for one of Asia ’ s longest continous slurry pipelines . Slimes reduction and optimised resource efficiency further contributed to AM / NS India ’ s operational success .”
By leveraging Derrick ’ s advanced technology and their commitment to customer satisfaction , AM / NS India achieved significant cost savings , increased productivity , and a more sustainable approach to iron ore processing . The operation achieved 90 % overall screening efficiency , minimising + 150 micron particles to less than 5 % in the pipeline feed ; increasing pellet plant capacity ; improving pellet quality , and reducing the Blaine number by 15 %. It reduced slimes ( 10 micron ) by 30 % and improved filtration capacity and overall productivity . Overall it has optimised resource utilisation ; enhanced pipeline protection and minimised environmental impact .
Sandvik consolidates screening assets worldwide
On October 1 , Schenck Process Australia Pty Limited , which became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sandvik in November last year , became Sandvik Rock Processing Australia Pty Ltd . The Australian entity is the largest part of SP Mining ’ s global business , employing around 450 industry professionals .
Since the acquisition , Sandvik says it has been focused on bringing together its expertise in crushing with the screening , feeding , weighing and loading know-how of Schenck Process Mining .
According to the company ’ s President Asia Pacific , Terese Withington , this move is part of an integration process that will eventually see SP Mining become a seamless part of the Sandvik organisation . “ In Australia , we are bringing together our sales and back-office teams with those of Sandvik Rock Processing Solutions to allow our customers to access our combined expertise in crushing , screening , feeding , weighing and loading ,” she said . “ Together we aim to deliver even better digitalisation , sustainability and productivity solutions to our industry . The end goal of our integration is to allow our customers to place combined crushing , screening , feeding , weighing and loading orders with our new legal entity .”

Sandvik Rock Processing Solutions also this year has integrated its two recent South African acquisitions into the Sandvik company structure – with the aim of becoming the preferred crushing and screening supplier to the mining industry in Africa . Sandvik Rock Processing Solutions South Africa has been formed from Kwatani , acquired in December 2021 , and the mining related business of Schenck Process Group in South Africa , acquired as part of the SP Mining acquisition .
According to Mats Dahlberg , Sandvik ’ s Vice President for Screening Solutions in Europe , Middle East and Africa , the goal is to become a leading force in the mining industry in Africa . “ Sandvik Rock Processing Solutions will continue to have a strong customer focus , providing the screening solutions that the customer needs and asks for . This we will do by strengthening our regional manufacturing and engineering capabilities in South Africa .”
He highlights that this will support the company ’ s ambition to further strengthen its presence throughout Africa , by building on the existing Sandvik entities located throughout Africa . The process will ensure the business is close to customers , providing not only leading screening solutions but also quality service and support availability .
The statement said that the Kwatani acquisition has already been very positive for the Sandvik group , with good volume growth year on year , Kwatani which was previously a family business is leveraging half a century of experience , innovation and customer loyalty .
