MINING ENGINES
• Engine OEM conditions met for safe and efficient stop( thermos, pressures, etc).
The engine will restart again in seconds if any of the following conditions are met:
• Operator touch pedals or steering;
• The park brake is released; and / or
• Any of the engine OEM specifications are not in range.
One of the advantages of idle management in this application include reduced fuel consumed during avoidable idling cycles by switching the engine off and entering a ready to work state using truckspecific operating data.
Another benefit is the consistent application of shutdown rules across shifts and operators.
FLANDERS also cited data on increased time between overhauls of the truck engine and other main components by reducing unnecessary engine hours, alongside a reduction in the number of planned maintenance events and associated cost per annum, due to lower engine hours over that period. Insights on remote condition monitoring and advanced data analytics also contribute to this.
“ Reduced engine hours per month leads to reduced operating expenditure spending in the case of maintenance and repair contracts which are based on engine hours,” FLANDERS added, explaining that
IMS creates a measurable data stream for evaluating these potential savings
At the mine in question, the data collected during the IMS evaluation was used to estimate the financial opportunity associated with reducing avoidable idle time. Based on the observed pilot activity and assumptions contained in the original proposal, the analysis projected the following annual savings:
• Fuel consumption reduction of circa-5-8 %;
• Engine life extension of more than 20 %( 1,252 engine hours saved per year);
• Lower maintenance cost associated with removing five planned maintenance events from the schedule; and
• Increased availability, also tied to the reduction in planned maintenance events.
Kim Weninger, FLANDERS Executive Chairman, said the pilot gave the company a clearer view of how much fuel was being consumed while the truck was idling.“ That data created a practical way to evaluate the potential savings, so much so that we have begun evaluating a broader fleet deployment,” she added.
This site-specific data is key to providing an accurate evaluation of the benefits that come with the IMS system, FLANDERS said.
“ Truck utilisation, haul profiles, queue times, climate, fuel pricing and operating behaviour vary from site to site,” it explained.
A pilot of FLANDERS IMS system at a mine in southern Africa has led to the further evaluation of a broader fleet deployment
“ Applying a generic savings percentage across an entire fleet may create an attractive estimate, but it does not provide the same confidence as data collected from the mine’ s own trucks.”

MINING ELECTRIFICATION. FULLY REALISED.

XNO ® is the world’ s leading niobium anode, delivering unmatched power, life and safety in one battery.
Mining’ s tough duty cycles destroy conventional battery chemistries. They charge slowly, degrade quickly under sustained high-rate cycling, and cannot maintain performance across temperature extremes.
XNO ® delivers on safety and fast-charge performance, at significantly higher energy density and lower cost. The result: a smaller, lighter battery that lasts longer and costs less over the vehicle’ s operating life.
See XNO ® in action. The world’ s first hybrid Cat 785 water truck, powered by XNO ®, is now on trial at an active mine site in Western Australia’ s Pilbara region. www. echiontech. com
