MR to make more mineral breakthroughs
New South Wales-based NextOre Ltd, now part of MagnaTerra Technologies, has been diversifying its commodity contact book as an understanding of the benefits that come with its magnetic resonance( MR)- backed technology become more widely appreciated by the mining community.
Its technology pulses radiofrequency waves into ore, which are tuned to the signature resonant frequency of target minerals. Response strength corresponds to mineral content, so it is a direct, quantitative and penetrative measurement technique, NextOre said.
The company has traditionally focused on the copper market, with many of its early on-conveyor wins featuring analysis or sorting solutions that upgrade the feed going into the downstream plant. The ability to accurately deliver run of mine grade readings has provided“ complete transparency” for tracking downstream processing and allowed operations to selectively reject waste material, according to the company.
It is now working on several new developments for the likes of lithium, iron ore and gold, Alex Mayer, Acting CEO of NextOre, told IM.
Mayer, a mining engineer, recently stepped into the role after long-time CEO, Chris Beal, departed. Mayer said he will

fill the vacancy while the board seeks out a new long-term replacement to take the company forward.
The good news for whoever joins the company in the permanent CEO role is that the NextOre strategy is very much inline with the mining sector’ s digital-first focus.
“ The great thing with the MR technology is it’ s not just about sorting; it’ s the ability to provide data and then take action,” Mayer said.
Being able to rapidly and accurately detect ore characteristics on a conveyorbased solution, with minimal calibration time,
and then take a decision based off that data is paying off for the companies NextOre is working with, according to Mayer.
“ The lessons we’ ve learned at Lundin Mining’ s majority-owned Candelaria mine, for example – where they are not actually sorting – is that the data the MR sensors provide can be used upstream of the conveyor to update the geological model, allowing them to take decisions in the pit that end up having positive impacts on the operation,” he said.
It is this philosophy that the company is pursuing as it readies a solution for the
