SIMULATORS & TRAINING
exhibited the new Cat 798 AC driver training simulator , developed by ThoroughTec . This product specific system forms part of Caterpillar ’ s comprehensive training program for the Cat 798 AC truck and features a direct replica of 798 AC operator controls , complete with a six-degree-ofmotion platform . The new simulator is designed to effectively train operators in the most efficient , safe and realistic way possible , including an ultrahigh definition replication of the mining environment in which the truck operates . The system also comes complete with dual screens at the instructor ’ s desk with the ability to provide a flyover view of the entire mining operation as well as monitor equipment and exercise parameters .
The Cat 798AC driver training simulator has been developed using Cat licensed technology , expert technical input and OEM components for the most realistic training experience . The operator ’ s controls are mounted to a militarygrade , six-degree-of-motion platform and include force-feedback steering for the most accurate simulated driving experience . It has enhanced graphics and ultrahigh definition laser projection visual system to immerse trainees in the virtual operating environment
Importantly , the simulator also features Caterpillar ’ s integrated equipment warning category 1 , 2 and 3 alarms and allows simulated fault injection , which teach operators to identify potential issues and take appropriate action . Enhanced learner training aids are included to assist both students and instructors when coaching new drivers on abstract operating concepts .
The simulator integrates ThoroughTec ’ s latest generation of CYBERMINE 6 software architecture and it operates in a highly detailed and realistic virtual Own Mine World that replicates the client ’ s mine site . This allows operators familiarise themselves with site conditions , rules and procedures in a safe environment .
For underground mining , ThoroughTec ’ s bolter simulator range has been expanded with a CYBERMINE simulator for Epiroc Boltec M operators . ThoroughTec states : “ The bolter operates in a highly realistic 3D virtual world where the operator can practice tramming , equipment and site operating procedures , and bolting various types of rock faces all in a safe and controlled environment .”
Small Mine Development is a contract miner and ThoroughTec customer . As the labour market evolves , it , like other contract miners has encountered increased staff turnover rates and a corresponding shortage of skilled personnel for critical mining positions . Tackling these challenges head-on , the company has turned to technology , introducing simulator training as a proactive means to both speed up and improve the quality of operator training .
“ Faced with these challenges , we have had to perform a lot more training , particularly in our truck driving positions .” stated Keith Jones , General Manager at Small Mine Development . “ However , this additional utilisation by less skilled operators has led to increased equipment damage .”
The decision to integrate simulator training stemmed from a desire to provide new hires with a comprehensive understanding of the underground environment before their on-site deployment . “ By offering a consistent and comprehensive training program utilizing simulators , we aim to equip our employees with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their roles ,” added Jones .
Key features of the simulator highlighted by Jones include its ability to replicate various underground scenarios , such as navigating uneven terrain and responding to emergencies situations , which are virtually impossible to train for using traditional methods . Additionally , the simulator enables trainees to practice develop machine sympathy and gain insight into the way their operating behaviour directly affects mine costs and profitability .
Small Mine Development opted to partner with ThoroughTec Simulation . “ We are pleased with the ThoroughTec simulator . Feedback from experienced operators is that it is quite realistic ,” noted Keith . When asked about the choice of ThoroughTec as the simulator provider , Keith emphasised the company ’ s reputation and the versatility of its offerings . “ We have a mixed fleet and did not want a brand specific simulator . Being able to switch cabs easily and the fact that ThoroughTec had many of the specific machines we operate , it was an easy decision .”
Small Mine Development has also launched a new training centre , with the simulator playing a pivotal role in enhancing the company ’ s training initiatives .
Finally , and uniquely to ThoroughTec ’ s offerings , all of these simulators integrate seamlessly with ThoroughTec ’ s WX Training Management System and live operator Analytics modules . WX TMS it says “ effectively digitises the creation , planning , control , reporting , and record-keeping for any and all mining training activities , regardless of medium , method , or content while WX Analytics closes the loop between heavy equipment operator performance in the field and the tailored training interventions required to improve that performance in the classroom .”
Immersive unveils the IM360 +
The Immersive Technologies IM360 + was recently launched at MINExpo 2024 , along with
never before seen visual system innovations to drive value for underground miners .
