SIMULATORS & TRAINING
itself can get involved with the training remotely . This includes online training when needed .
As stated , training and sims-based training for autonomous operations using AutoMine is still handled by a separate team . But discussions are underway on synergies between the nonautonomous and autonomous machine training from a sims point of view . The LH518iB for example will ultimately be capable of running autonomously so having the right sim solutions in place for an autonomous BEV will be very powerful in terms of the autonomous operator and the teams who need to maintain and troubleshoot these machines . “ This is a great point , with great relevance at the moment and is something customers have been asking us about . While things are at a very early stage I can say that the training departments on both the autonomous and non-autonomous sides are dicussing greater collaboration and cooperation on how we can achieve greater integration of simulation solutions into one platform . We simulate the machine , and they simulate the automation but clearly there is a lot of common ground – so the ideal would be to achieve a simulator that is ‘ autonomy training ready ’ in the same way as some of our machines are autonomy ready .
Epiroc ’ s new load-haul sims
While previously mainly focused on simulators for its underground and surface drilling machines , Epiroc also has classroom simulator versions for its primary underground load and haul machines . This currently includes an interchangeable sim for the ST14 Scooptram and MT42 Minetruck but Malin Lindberg , Product Specialist - Learning Tools told IM that it is currently developing a MT65 Minetruck application for the classroom version as well . “ Other ongoing developments in simulators include a solution for our Boomer M20 which has our new CCS ( Carrier Control System ) that replaces the old steering wheel and hydraulic controlled functions with a touch screen and user friendly operator panel .”
Epiroc works closely with partner Oryx Simulations AB , which manufactures the simulators . The ST14 and MT42 simulator is called the Epiroc LHD 600 , with the same base platform . Switching is done by changing control pods and some of the components ( eg joysticks for the Scooptram and steering wheel for the Minetruck ). The relevant RCS software changes are made by using the appropriate machine kit loaded via USB and then calibrating all the relevant components . The simulator uses the same RCS software that the real machines use .
Once logged in to the simulator , the user is presented with a list of all installed applications . Each application comes with its own set of exercises and machine configurations . In general , each application addresses a specific skill-set and / or a specific machine configuration .
Once an application is selected , the user will be faced with a scenario selection page showing all the available scenarios . In demonstration mode , all the available exercises for the selected application will be displayed . When not running in demonstration mode , the available scenarios are defined by the group the current user is assigned to . A performance chart and description is displayed for the highlighted scenario .
The user can access the operator performance system ( OPS ) via the OPS icon on the header . Once inside the OPS the user can follow up on the current training results as well as prepare for scenarios by accessing the theoretical part of the training .
Simformotion and Caterpillar ’ s collaborative working environment
Part of Caterpillar ’ s Equipment Training Solutions ’ comprehensive training approach , the new Cat ® Simulators Collaborative Worksite Training™ package , developed by Simformotion™ , teaches operators how to work together as a team . The new program , which was unveiled at MINExpo 2024 in September , connects a Cat 6060 hydraulic mining shovel and 793 mining truck in a collaborative working environment , adding a level of human interaction and a more real-life feel for the load / haul cycle , without the fear of causing harm to themselves , others or the equipment . Collaborative Worksite Training offers more realistic experience than traditional AI simulators by adding a level of human interaction . It is described as an ideal solution for in-person operator training or for remote training with learners in different rooms . It teaches learners how to work together and succeed in real-world virtual conditions ; plus operating scenarios introduce more real-life variables for the loading and hauling cycle . Load / haul site conditions can carry over between sessions for more realistic training at start-up . The solution was developed in collaboration with Caterpillar equipment trainers and using customer feedback .
Simformotion has also recently released its new Cat ® Simulators Hydraulic Mining Shovel System . Operator trainees can utilise the system inside a classroom or at satellite mine locations . The hands-on training system is set in a mining environment and teaches learners how to operate the Hydraulic Mining Shovel , including inspecting the machine , spotting and properly loading trucks , and more . Simformotion : “ Correct , efficient operation increases safety , production and cost savings . Simulation is a safe alternative to using actual machines for heavy equipment operator training . Students and operators can train anytime and anywhere using

simulators - no need to take a costly machine out of production , worry about the weather or , most importantly , worry about the operator ’ s safety .”
“ The new Hydraulic Mining Shovel simulator system is the cornerstone of our Cat Simulators mining models . The system trains students and operators using authentic Cat controls and teaches applications found on real-world job sites . We often hear of the struggles to find skilled operators . Cat Simulators systems help companies build their own workforce ,” says Simformotion CEO Lara Aaron .
The Cat Simulators Hydraulic Mining Shovel system is available in multiple languages and includes SimU Campus™ , a built-in reporting software that records and generates reports of learners ’ simulation sessions and compares their performance to Caterpillar benchmarks . The system features authentic Cat controls , a motion system , exclusive walkaround machine inspection training , and a companion SimScholars™ curriculum , making the training package a unique offering .
“ The companion SimScholars online curriculum is a one-to-one match with the simulator model and can be used in the classroom or for remote learning . It is an interactive , turn-key solution complete with instructor guides , videos , quizzes and more . Integrate the Cat Simulators Hydraulic Mining Shovel system and its curriculum together for a unique , blended learning experience .”
For even more training value and for a more immersive experience , users can add VR Edition . With the VR headset and patented VR Now technology , users experience a larger view of the virtual environment with greater depth perception . The simulator is portable and easy to move from a training room to a trailer to satellite locations .
