Digital transformation is also front and centre of Murray & Roberts Cementation ’ s technology plans in the contract mining space , according to Graham Chamberlain , New Business Director .
“ In the contract mining space , digitalisation is all about economics , improving productivity and performance ,” he told IM . “ This means generating real-time information in response to requirements on remote sites , through operational technology and enabling systems .”
Murray & Roberts Cementation ’ s focus , to date , has been on enhancing its planning , maintenance and training operations with such data . On a client ’ s site , the flow of this data has also translated into moves toward electric vehicles or enhanced and efficient diesel engines – depending on the maturity of the project – according to Chamberlain .
He says the company has a good relationship with OEMs , with global agreements in place with the main players covering a range of equipment , including battery-electric vehicles and autonomous equipment .
“ As a contractor of choice , these agreements help us to optimise delivery times and maintenance , to gain competitive advantage ,” he said .
Having a holistic focus across the mine development and production chain , Murray & Roberts Cementation also collaborates with OEMs on developing and leveraging mechanised vertical ( blind sinking ) and horizonal mine development ( tunnel boring machines ) technologies .
Like many of its peers , Murray & Roberts Cementation ’ s work is heavily influenced by its ongoing ESG considerations .
“ ESG is a major driver among Tier 1 mining companies , and they require similar attention to these issues from their supply partners ,” Chamberlain said , explaining that Murray & Roberts Cementation contributes to its clients ’ ESG agenda through a range of initiatives .
“ In our business more broadly , an example of our ESG commitment is our large investment in solar energy at our training academy at Bentley Park
near Carletonville ( in South Africa ),” he said . “ While it is more difficult to achieve ESG gains on our temporary sites , we deliberately design facilities with energy efficiency in mind , such as change houses with heat pumps instead of geysers .”
