SURFACE LOADING you chose to upgrade from a diesel to electric down the road - that is an achievable possibility . There is less carbon footprint which is pretty important these days as well .”
Nils Feddern , HMS Application Specialist , Caterpillar : “ It has the same twin engine concept that we already have with diesel , now we also have this with electric drive . We are getting here in this application around 95 % bucket fill so you can load a 793 in four passes . If you talk about yearly production , the 6060 can dig up to 21 Mt per year . That ’ s a perfect match for this customer . Uptime is the most important for the customer so with the next gen 6060 electric , this was our focus . If you look at electric drive , you don ’ t have to change oil filters , air filters and there ’ s no engine rebuild . So the uptime for electric drive is much higher versus diesel drive . With the next gen machine we implemented Cat hoses and we also redesigned the hose routing . These hoses can run 1 million inputs , whereas industry hoses can only last 500,000 inputs . This was a huge improvement . With the next gen machine everything is completely converted into the Caterpillar parts system , so this makes it much easier for the dealer and customer to support this machine .”
Dan Goulet , 6060 Operator : “ When you ’ re doing your pre-op inspection , the electric shovel is so much quicker . Because you ’ re not looking at engine oil leaks or transmission oil leaks - its not dirty , everything is very clean . If there ’ s an issue , you will spot it right away . The new 6060 is far more comfortable than the old model - the cab is luxurious , so I can spend more time in it with less fatigue . At the end of a 12 hour shift it makes a difference . And if you ’ ve got to train somebody , now you have a nice seat in the back and you ’ ve got a second seat on the side .”
Feddern adds : “ The focus was reducing operator fatigue - we went from 74 decibels to 68 decibels and this is super quiet . It also has greater operator assist and enhanced motion control which make it way easier for the operator to control the attachment , get a good bucket fill , and swing to the truck .”
Goulet continues : “ MineStar makes it a lot easier now - I can actually see exactly where my bucket is - the exact height of my bucket - which I never had before . Its almost a no brainer - now knowing where your bucket is , right away you are hitting grade perfectly . Also for knowing which materials you are in , it already automatically sets your material - whether you are in waste or ore . Its definitely more precise than other systems .

Everything on the machine is a step up from before .”
Eric Gosselin , Mine Manager at Cote Gold : “ I ’ m a fan of electric shovels , I think they ’ re pretty reliable and as the pit gets bigger , I think they ’ ll get even more efficient for us and with a lower cost as well .”
Tanner Musselman , Technology Product Support Manager , IAMGOLD Cote Gold Mine : “ When you look at how its performing out there now , and getting the operators in there that have worked on the diesel engine ones , their attitude towards it is awesome to see - they get excited about being in there - its quieter , its smooth - they ’ re really enjoying it .”
