PASTE & TAILINGS says Virta is well-equipped to deploy and optimise RAHCO’ s advanced systems across a wide variety of mine sites globally.
“ By integrating RAHCO’ s innovative MSC system with Virta’ s field-proven capabilities, clients benefit from a cohesive and highly efficient approach that mitigates project risks, accelerates deployment timelines, and ensures sustained system reliability. This strategic synergy delivers a forward-thinking, sustainable solution for tailings management that adheres to modern regulatory and environmental standards while maximising operational performance.”
He continues:“ RAHCO’ s MSC provides a highly effective and proven solution for handling filtered tailings- an increasingly critical need in today’ s mining industry. As operators face growing pressure to implement safe, cost-effective, and environmentally sound disposal methods, the MSC offers a standout alternative. Designed with operational versatility in mind, it supports multiple stacking methodologies to meet varying geotechnical specifications and operational constraints, making it ideal for high-capacity tailings management.”
One of the MSC’ s primary advantages is its ability to distribute ground loads over a wide area. This is particularly important in filtered tailings stacking, where traditional systems can create concentrated pressure points that risk destabilising stack edges or necessitate additional handling to manage thinly spread layers. The MSC’ s multi-bridge configuration mitigates these concerns, delivering a more stable and predictable stacking solution.
Additionally, the MSC minimises critical failure points, especially at conveyor transfer locations. Unlike conventional systems- where transfer points often lead to material spillage, mechanical degradation, and increased maintenance- the MSC’ s continuous, integrated design eliminates the need for multiple transfer zones commonly found in portable or grasshopper conveyor setups. This streamlining significantly enhances system uptime, reliability, and overall availability.
“ Now offered through Virta, the RAHCO MSC represents a best-in-class platform for filtered tailings stacking. Together, the advanced design of the MSC and Virta’ s executional excellence present a compelling and scalable solution for modern mining operations seeking reliable, resilient, and future-ready tailings management systems.”
FLS tailings solution for Hermosa
FLSmidth is delivering concentrate and tailings filters to South32’ s Hermosa critical minerals project in the US. This new FLSmidth order will contribute to an increased supply of critical minerals such as zinc and manganese supporting the continued electrification of society.
The mine operation is designed to minimise its environmental impact, and the equipment that FLSmidth will deliver plays a critical role in supporting this. FLSmidth has received an order to deliver five AFP2500 concentrate and tailings filters to Hermosa which is located in the Patagonia Mountains of southern Arizona, US.
A key requirement for South32 is to utilise the most efficient process technologies with the lowest environmental impact. The project’ s design is expected to result in ~ 75 % less water consumption compared to other mines in the region, and FLSmidth’ s filter tailings technology will be a key enabler of this.
“ A key element in enabling sustainable mining is among other to reduce water consumption. Consequently, South32’ s ambition of developing a mine operation with a low environmental impact, including a significantly reduced water consumption, is fully aligned with our MissionZero ambitions. Tailings filtration is one of the core competencies of FLSmidth, and therefore we are obviously pleased to support the development of this important project,” comments Chris Reinbold, Products Business Line President at FLSmidth.
