SOUTH AFRICAN SUPPLIERS
Essack noted fewer requests for quotations on new local South African projects , alongside an uptick in enquiries for brownfield expansions . “ Customers are looking to improve the efficiency of their operations , improve time between maintenance stoppage cycles and enhance their production assets ,” he said . “ This is where Weir Minerals ’ value-added offering in terms of performance , reliability and sustainability comes to the fore , allowing us to deliver a quantifiable return on capital investment .”
Over the last 12 months , Weir Minerals has supplied several significant orders in Africa , including the delivery of an Enduron ® HPGR unit to a gold mine in West Africa that will reduce the site ’ s overall power consumption . It has also commissioned the largest slurry pump in the African region – the Warman ® 750MCR mill circuit pump – at a high tonnage copper project in Zambia . This installation , Essack says , will help reduce operating costs and improve mill circuit production performance .
In terms of the delivering the company ’ s latest technology to mines in the region , Essack can point to the delivery of Cavex ® 2 CVD hydrocyclones , featuring Weir Minerals ’ LIG + ™ design , to a gold mine in West Africa .
“ The Cavex 2 CVD hydrocyclones operate at 30 % higher throughput and improved cut point compared to equivalent sized hydrocyclones on the market ,” Essack said . “ The solution was also Synertrex ® equipment condition and operation monitoring enabled , providing the customer with unrivalled asset and process visibility .”
And in the South African iron ore space , Weir Minerals recently progressed from order to commissioning within 12 months on a complete 150 t / h iron ore crushing and screening plant . This included a Trio ® feed hopper with Trio vibrating feeder and static grizzly , primary and secondary Trio cone crushers , Enduron double
SafeGauge ’ s South Africa entry
SafeGauge is looking to address the hazardous and time-consuming task of live testing mining vehicles and equipment with its range of digital testing systems , which will now be distributed in South Africa by Booyco Electronics .
Live testing , in this instance , refers to the testing of large equipment like articulated dump trucks , rigid frame dump trucks , LHDs and hydraulic shovels while they are running , to generate vital data on the machines ’ condition .
This is traditionally conducted with hoses and handheld gauges , to test variables such as pressure , fan speed and wear on rotating equipment such as slew bearings , according to Graeme Jardine , Booyco Electronics ’ Chief Sales Officer . The practice often involves maintenance staff being in close proximity to an idling machine , working near high pressures and rotating components .
“ By introducing the SafeGauge sensors and products , which are fitted to large equipment with quick couplers or magnets , the necessary readings and measurements can be taken from a distance of up to 50 m ,” he explained . “ This removes the personnel from any hazardous areas where they might , for instance , be positioned in crush zones of unplanned movement .”
This wireless monitoring system not only allows workers to test live machines from a safe distance , but it also does it up to seven times quicker , according to the company , translating into less downtime and improved productivity .
Jardine notes that the SafeGauge Field Service Kit has been particularly popular as an all-in-one kit for field technicians and includes a dial indicator for wear measurement and two pressure transducers for pressure measurement .
“ In our engagement with markets in South Africa and north of our borders , customers have been enthusiastic about putting SafeGauge to work ,” he said . “ They have also been impressed by how easy it is to use the equipment , with just a relatively short induction .”
