Q Your first new equipment development is the LEOPOLD next generation bucketwheel excavator – what was the motivation and vision behind it ? A It has come in response to growing customer demand for compact bucketwheel excavators with enhanced capabilities , and we recognised that the need for such machines remains significant , particularly in specific deposits . The market requirements in cutting harder materials and the pressure in production costs together with the long experience of MCI in compact bucket wheel excavator technology , consequently led to develop a solution in non-blasting continuous cutting operation ; a step changes were required to achieve substantial improvements . This evolution naturally led to the development of the next-generation LEOPOLD , a project inspired by both historical legacy and modern industry challenges . The original Leopold , the VABE 700 , was a cornerstone of Austrian coal mining . Designed in the 1980s , it was engineered to conquer some of the toughest overburden conditions ever encountered , operating with unparalleled reliability and efficiency . Especially overburden and waste operations are facing harder geological formations , increasing pre-stripping costs and stricter environmental regulations referred to less blasting , and the need for higher operational efficiency . Recognising these challenges , and with a firm understanding of market needs , we embarked on the ambitious journey to design a machine that not only upholds LEOPOLD ’ s legacy but redefines industry standards . The development of the new LEOPOLD was a methodical and strategic step for MCI . Drawing on years of hands-on experience in mining operations and leveraging the expertise of our expanded engineering team , we crafted a machine that is both innovative and rooted in proven principles .

This advanced compact bucket wheel excavator is specifically designed to excel in tough geological conditions , processing harder deposit layers with compressive strengths well above the strengths of previous compact bucketwheel applications - without the need for blasting . We have been challenged by the customers and by the deposits – not only in coal and lignite but also associated overburden as well as bulk industrial minerals like phosphate and bauxite . In cases where you have very hard overburden or layers , compact bucketwheel mining can be combined with an IPCC-type system or even IPCC with some truck and shovel mining . Another important point is that LEOPOLD was also designed with long operational life in mind , again based on our experience in refurbishment and revamping .
