Innovation out of tradition
Thomas Jabs took over as CEO of materials handling , IPCC and specialised mining systems company TAKRAF just over a year ago in December 2022 . Paul Moore caught up with him to get some insight into the his thoughts on being in the role so far
Q Since you have assumed the role of TAKRAF Group CEO , could you share some insights into your experiences and challenges in leading the group ? A It has been an incredibly dynamic and rewarding year . This journey has been filled with a lot of excitement , and I could not be more pleased with the progress we have made as a team . One of the outstanding aspects is our excellent portfolio position , which set the stage for robust growth and development . We have strategically positioned ourselves to leverage on emerging opportunities , ensuring that our portfolio not only meets , but exceeds market expectations . Perhaps the most gratifying part of this journey was witnessing the unwavering motivation of our global teams . Their dedication and enthusiasm have played a key role in our success . This year has seen an exceptional level of engagement , resulting in a record order intake for the group . What is particularly exciting is the strategic importance of some of the larger orders - a testament to our ability to not only meet our customers ’ needs , but to anticipate them . As we reflect on the past year or so , it is clear that the hard work has truly paid off , and I am proud of our team that consistently strives for excellence . As we look to the future , we are poised for even greater achievements , and I am truly excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for both our customers and us .
Q How do you intend to further shape the future of the organisation in the dynamic mining industry ? A Envisioning the future of our organisation in the dynamic mining industry involves empowering our business units to act strategically and remain flexible . Our global competence centres for TAKRAF solutions in Germany and DELKOR India , aim to foster collaboration and innovation across our global network . A central aspect of this vision is to instill a strong sense of purpose throughout the company , ensuring that every team member understands and is aware of our overarching goal – we help to secure the metal supply of the future . This approach not only enhances internal cohesion but also strengthens our relationships with customers . The strategy emphasises concentrating on core competencies , leveraging our complete portfolio , and exploring the exciting synergies between the TAKRAF and DELKOR portfolios . By doing so , we aim to excel in operations , differentiate ourselves in the market , and deliver unparalleled value to our clients .
Q It is remarkable that TAKRAF will celebrate its 300th anniversary in 2025 . How would you describe the company ' s historical journey and evolution in the mining , bulk material handling and minerals processing industries ? A It is truly a momentous occasion for our company as we approach our 300th anniversary in 2025 . Our journey began nearly three centuries ago when a visionary woman founded the company , demonstrating incredible foresight that has shaped our legacy . Over the years , we have gone through many changes , transitions and reinventions to become the powerful contender we are today . From our early days we became a trusted household name in open pit and underground mining , material handling , minerals processing and beyond . Our resilience and commitment to excellence have been the driving forces behind our success . Being proud of our rich history we look forward to

Q Are there any plans or special initiatives in the pipeline to commemorate this significant milestone ? A Yes , 2025 will be an exciting year as we celebrate 300 years of history with a variety of initiatives . This year-long celebration will not just be a look at the past ; it will represent a journey through our achievements , embracing the present and the future . In partnership with the town of Lauchhammer in Germany , where it all began , our celebrations will be immersive and TAKRAF community-driven . This collaboration adds a unique dimension to our commemoration and connects us even deeper to our roots .
Q Moving to sustainability , what is your perspective on the mining industry ' s contribution to the global energy transition ? A The mining industry is a pivotal player in the global energy transition . It provides critical metals such as copper , lithium , manganese , cobalt and rare earths ( to name but a few ) that are essential to clean energy technologies . But the energy transition also requires immense quantities of iron ore and bauxite . Sustainable mining practices are not only beneficial , they are essential to the success of this transition . I firmly believe that mining is not just an enabler , but a core business in leading and providing the basis for the energy transition and requires a commitment to ethical and environmentally responsible practices in itself for a sustainable future .
Q Do you believe the mining industry is at an inflection point , particularly regarding its role in the green transition ? A The mining industry is increasingly recognised as indispensable to the supply chain for critical metals that are essential to various industries . Its evolution is driven by the demands of the technology and EV sectors , heightened geopolitical efforts to achieve resource independence , and the anticipated supply-demand gap , particularly in copper . Countries are striving to minimise dependence on nations with unfavourable mining conditions or which are subject to political instability . This trend , along with the challenge of depleting resources , shapes the multifaceted dynamics steering the mining industry ' s trajectory .
Q How does TAKRAF perceive its role in promoting sustainability within the mining , bulk material handling and minerals processing sectors ? A At TAKRAF Group , we are deeply committed to sustainability across the
