Intelligent process digitalisation
Huawei’ s progress in the chemical sector with AI also has analogues in mining
There are many synergies between the mining industry and the chemical sector. For instance, coal extracted from mines is often used as a raw material in the chemical sector. In a recent presentation, Junpeng Li, President of Chemical & Building Material BU at Huawei discussed digital and intelligent transformation in that industry.
The chemical industry has gone through stages of mechanisation, electrification & informatisation, with most enterprises now entering the digital phase. Large enterprises are beginning to move from partial digitalisation to comprehensive digitalisation. As cloud and unified digital platforms are being established, some localised intelligent applications are being piloted, and innovative trials of big data and AI models are starting to emerge, such as optimisation of operation parameters on distillation units and intelligent RTO for coal gasification.
Currently, Huawei has already utilised AI large models in some production scenarios. For example, it has used a large computer vision model in enhancing production safety, and uses a large predictive model in maintenance of production units and process optimisation. Compared with the current situation, the testing results show that AI can help the industry achieve improvements in safety and efficiency, as well as greater environmental friendliness.
In addition to collaborative AI innovations in areas such as process optimisation, predictive maintenance, and safety enhancement within the chemical industry, Huawei has also undertaken numerous AI innovations with leading clients in resource-based industries including mining. For example, it has applied / used AI large models in different scenarios, such as safe production in underground coal mines.
lack / absence of sophisticated fault analysis methods; thirdly, the deficiency of auxiliary tools for developing maintenance strategies. According to these pain points, Huawei and its partners have integrated data on vibration, processes, and work orders, leveraging a predictive large model to develop three key capabilities: time-series anomaly detection, root cause analysis, and time-series prediction.
Huawei has built an end-to-end solution covering equipment monitoring, fault diagnosis, unit life prediction, and maintenance management. This solution can help to predict the failures of product units two weeks to two months in advance.
In response to unsafe personnel behaviours, hazardous object conditions, and unsafe environmental factors in chemical enterprises, Huawei has established three layers of safety defences, from the inside out. These layers leverage ICT technologies such as AI large models, fibre-based vibration inspection, precise positioning, logistics security, traffic management and various IoT technologies. These technical solutions have significantly enhanced the safety production standards of chemical enterprises and reduced the probability of a security incident occurring.
ICT Infra enables AI large model training and optimisation, edge inference; at the same time, it enables production running data acquisition and control command delivered in real time.
Huawei focuses on providing ICT infrastructure and development support services, supporting partners in data governance and the rapid development of scenario applications. In the digital and intelligent phases, in order to achieve digital twins and intelligent control, the core requirements for IT platform are realtime data upload and rapid application development. So, it promotes adoption of an industrial internet architecture as the technical framework for the construction of an intelligent chemical plant.
In this architecture, there are four layers, the intelligent instrumentation layer, industrial network layer, cloud platform layer, and application layer. Each layer is decoupled from the others. The real-time running data of units can be transmitted in real time, and all data can be shared seamlessly across systems. The cloud platform also supports model training and optimisation, alongside data governance and the development of intelligent applications.
Huawei also provides end-to-end daily scheduling, onsite operations, and emergency management solutions for chemical plants by using eLTE private networks, converged communications, and various professional operation terminals. Huawei provides multiple types of trunking intercom and supports large-screen terminals. Mobile video brings better experience and higher efficiency, improving efficiency by 30 %.
Huawei has accumulated over 50 global projects in the intelligent chemical industry field. It covers intelligent plants, chemical parks, and ICT infrastructure construction for chemical enterprises or chemical groups.
Predictive maintenance solutions
In predictive maintenance, refining and chemical enterprises commonly face three major challenges in the field of units’ maintenance: firstly, lack of early warning capabilities for trend anomalies; secondly,
