RIEGL’ s laser scanners – essential tools in an evolving mining landscape
As mining operations scale in complexity and geographic scope, the demand for robust and precise spatial data acquisition technologies continues to grow. Thomas Gaisecker, who handles International Partner Management at RIEGL, says its terrestrial laser scanners( TLS) have become essential tools in this landscape, offering unique advantages in performance, flexibility, and integration.
RIEGL introduced its first V-Line scanner- the VZ-400- in 2008, pioneering full waveform processing for terrestrial LiDAR. This marked a technological breakthrough:
the ability to analyse the complete waveform of each laser pulse enabled multi-target detection, calibrated amplitude, and reflectance measurements. Such capabilities are crucial in mining environments where complex surfaces, vegetation cover, and atmospheric disturbances( eg dust, rain, or fog) can compromise traditional optical methods.
Over the years, RIEGL has expanded its portfolio to include scanners with extended range capabilities- up to 6,000 m in the case of the VZ-6000. This makes them uniquely suitable for large-scale openpit mines and remote highwall or slope monitoring. The integration of“ Multiple- Time-Around”( MTA) processing further ensures that long-range measurements remain accurate, even at high pulse repetition rates.
Gaisecker:“ What sets RIEGL scanners apart is not only their raw measurement performance but also their built-in intelligence. The VZ-i Series, launched in 2016, introduced onboard data processing via an embedded Linux operating system. This open platform enables users to run custom applications directly on the scanner, whether written in Python or C ++, making the systems adaptable for diverse projectspecific workflows.”
These onboard capabilities allow
real-time data processing and automated decision-making. Measurements can be transformed instantly into actionable information- such as deformation alerts or design compliance checks- without external software or user intervention. Additionally, the scanners can communicate over LAN, Wi-Fi, or LTE, ensuring full remote access and control, which is vital in dangerous or inaccessible mining zones.
RIEGL TLS systems are also designed to work seamlessly with external sensors for temperature, humidity, and pressure, ensuring environmental corrections are applied to maintain the highest data quality. This is especially valuable when monitoring over long distances, where even minor atmospheric fluctuations can affect range accuracy.
