MINE RESCUE & SAFETY
Multi-sensor gas detection
Canada-based PROVIX is well known for providing innovative solutions for both surface and underground mining operations across the globe . PROVIX enhanced vision systems , the company says , simultaneously boost productivity while offering safer operations .
The company ’ s mine rescue systems consist of a comprehensive gas detection warning system as well as a thermal imaging camera system – bidirectional fixed thermal cameras or dual sensor PTZ cameras among the options .
Its gas detection systems are flexible , offering detection of the likes of CO , CH 4 , H 2 , H 2S , NO 2 , CO 2 , O 2 , CL 2 , NH 3 , O 3 , NO , HCN , HCL and more . The embedded gas sensors are 100 % functionally tested and operated for an extended period before being shipped to the customer , with the company utilising Dräger and Conspec sensors to ensure it provides high-quality and reliable devices .
PROVIX ’ s systems are being added to mine rescue vehicles and underground ambulances across North America . In Canada , both Miller Technology ( Ontario ) and Access Mining ( Quebec ) specify the PROVIX system in their new builds .
The system uses multiple sensors for identifying gas leak accumulations and can be fitted on any vehicle , the company claims .
“ Key to user satisfaction is the flexibility in designing the system to meet the requirements of each operation ,” PROVIX says . “ Additional cameras can be added as well as a selection of applicable gas sensors based on the operational requirements of each mine .”
In addition to Miller Technology and Access Mining , PROVIX can name Newmont , Vale , Evolution Mining and Glencore as customers for these solutions .
“ The PROVIX system is unique in that it offers a video overlay of the gas values on the thermal imaging monitors ,” the company explains . “ Both the navigator and mine rescue personnel in the troop compartment can view the thermal imaging camera display as well as the gas values . All data and video are continuously recorded to the onboard DVR . Optionally , both real-time viewing and uploads to a central server are available
PROVIX ’ s thermal cameras and integrated gas detection systems are being added to mine rescue vehicles and underground ambulances across North America
when a Wi-Fi access point is available .”
The system is available with both visual and audible alarms , with both passenger and rear occupants also able to monitor the system . In addition , optional internal relays are available for automatic control of auxiliary devices .
To the rescue
PAUS and Dräger ’ s MRV 9000 self-contained and mine-proven rescue vehicle is built off a modified PAUS MinCa 18 A chassis and leverages life support systems and safety technologies from Dräger .

MINING
The vehicle is designed as an integrated life support system that allows mine rescuers to drive through contaminated areas while providing safe and clean breathing air in a controlled environment that help reduce rescue mission times .
PAUS , Dräger and “ the world ’ s leading manufacturer of systems for firefighting and disaster protection ” will soon develop a Mine Rescue Vehicle with a special focus on innovative firefighting appliances , PAUS says . This solution originated from a need to stave off fires in their initial stages – before they develop into life- and equipment-threatening events – where rescue teams may not be able to travel and bring their equipment to the scene as soon as they would like .
