MINING ENGINES manufacturers prefer fully integrated H2 injection systems instead of a single component solution , with the dedicated Liebherr team pursuing the former approach with its common-rail solutions for both diesel and alternative fuels .
The company said : “ Liebherr focuses on the sizing and design of a fully comprehensive H2 injection system , including system pressure control . This means that customers continue to enjoy the benefits of an integrated solution . In addition to the injector , the experts in Deggendorf are currently working on the development and integration of further components for system solutions .”
Hybrid developments
Rolls-Royce ’ s business unit Power Systems has continued to ‘ hedge its bets ’ when it comes to the future of powering mobile mining equipment , investing in a whole range of developments .
The company revealed last year that it was working with FLANDERS Electric on a plan to develop a retrofit solution for hybridising mining trucks with mtu engines , batteries and hybrid control systems , plus FLANDERS drivetrain solutions .
This hybrid solution is designed to recover braking energy using the mtu EnergyPack battery system , with the energy then fed back to power the wheel motors , allowing the diesel engine to be downsized . The smaller engine reduces fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions by up to 30 %, helping mining customers achieve their emissionreduction targets while optimising their operations , the company says .
The hybrid concept also includes the DC / DC converters which interface the battery system with the DC link of the truck . The system is highly modular and scalable for trucks of any size , working anywhere in the world , according to Rolls-Royce .
By 2030 , the Rolls-Royce business unit aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 35 % compared with its 2019 level using new net zero and zero carbon technologies . This near-term target plays a significant role in Rolls-Royce Group ’ s ambition to achieve net zero by 2050 at the latest .
A key element in achieving these goals is the certification of the most important mtu engine products , which will run on sustainable fuels from as early as 2023 and then be successively brought into use .
“ The certification means that the new generation of Series 2000 and 4000 engines – that currently account for 85 % of our sales revenues – will be qualified to run on secondgeneration bio-fuels and on e-fuels ,” Dr Otto Preiss , Chief Technology Officer and COO of
Rolls Royce Power Systems Business Unit announced last year that it was working with FLANDERS Electric on a plan to develop a retrofit solution for hybridising mining trucks with mtu engines , batteries and hybrid control systems , plus FLANDERS drivetrain solutions
Rolls-Royce Power Systems , said .
These engines are used in a wide variety of applications , with mining a key market – the Series 4000 is used , for example , in Liebherr ’ s T 284 haul truck .
Besides using sustainable fuels , the Rolls- Royce business unit is also building on new technologies such as CO 2-free fuel cell systems . This is on top of plans to increase the amounts of hydrogen used in its power generation engine applications with its mtu Series 500 and Series 4000 platforms .
