MINE POWER rural communities . This could see solutions deployed for contract durations of below five years .
“ This innovation has the potential to open the door to more renewable power for the mining industry and in locations that previously seemed out of scope ,” Boruchowicz said .
The company already has four projects ongoing to deploy these solutions , one of which is at the Wetar mining project in Indonesia , owned by PT Merdeka Copper Gold Tbk . Here Aggreko is working on fast commissioning of containerised modular solar units to be deployed at Wetar over five years , with the possibility to further ramp-up solar capacity , it said .
“ This is the first mining project on which we have installed such technology , combined with an Aggreko megawatt-scale lithium-ion battery storage unit for spinning reserve displacement and Energy Management System ,” Aggreko said .
When asked about the inevitable need to scale up renewable capacity to match increased demand at mine sites looking to further electrify operations , Saffy said Aggreko ’ s continual investment in both thermal and renewable technology would meet the demands that came with the electric energy transition .
“ We believe , over time , that renewable energy will continue to increase as a portion of generation on a mine site ,” he said . “ Despite the changes , we feel the increase in additional power demand is certainly manageable , especially with
Aggreko ’ s ability to scale up or down in capacity to meet site demand .”
‘ Green grid ’ ambitions
Arctic power specialist TUGLIQ is poised to support mining companies ’ intent on electrifying equipment and plants with renewable energy – even as hitting 100 % renewable penetration remains a long-term goal .
As a first step in this strategy , the company is working on implementing electric vehicle charging infrastructure at the Raglan nickel mine in Canada ’ s Far North that could , according to Paul-Étienne Carrier , Project Manager of TUGLIQ ’ s EV program , “ ensure future electric vehicles are charged using segregated green electrons from the hybrid grid ”. Currently the mine ’ s energy mix is comprised of traditional diesel-generated power and renewable energy coming from TUGLIQ wind turbines .
This could see mines with all levels of renewable energy generation guarantee that the
TUGLIQ plans to have two arctic-ready batteryelectric converted Silverado / Sierra 2500 HD trucks at mine sites this quarter
electric vehicles they are running are being energised by green means .
Yet TUGLIQ ’ s goal goes beyond segregating the existing power of the microgrid by source .
Due to the complexities of safely integrating renewable energy into microgrids at remote mine sites , ‘ green energy ’ generation is often halted , even if the resource is abundant . This is a lost opportunity TUGLIQ wants to address .
“ We want to charge these vehicles on
