contract with LW Bogdanka in Poland tied to both upgrading existing machinery and delivering new longwall system equipment .
Bogdanka ’ s operations are the most advanced in the country in terms of equipment sophistication and productivity , with the company aiming to become the most costefficient producer of thermal coal in Poland , Artur Wasil , the President of the Management Board of LW Bogdanka , recently said .
In August 2021 , meanwhile , US-based Century Mining LLC confirmed an order for PRS from FAMUR , with the contract representing the first time a Polish mining equipment manufacturer will have supplied such equipment directly to the US .
FAMUR ’ s PRS will be delivered to the newly built Longview coking coal mine in West Virginia . Beforehand , prototype sections of the roof supports will be tested to verify compliance with US durability standards . The $ 28 million order completion date is the March quarter of 2023 .
“ This agreement opens up a new , extremely demanding market for us and proves that we are one of the world ’ s leaders ,” Mirosław Bendzera , President of FAMUR , said of the order .
Product and region diversification is a key part of FAMUR Group ’ s future strategic plans , with the company having placed significant stock in winning business from overseas .
On top of the Century Mining contract in the US , the company has secured significant business in Kazakhstan and China , among other locations .
China , in particular , has been a key market for the company ’ s MIKRUS low , thin-seam longwall system .

The combination of cutting drums driven by a high-powered engine and a simple coal cutting head moved by drives results in the cutting head moving almost entirely into the tailgate and main-gate gallery in an alternating travel path . This allows the cutting drum to sump in the coal perpendicularly from the gate or from the face of the drum to significantly shorten the process of sumping into the next cut . As a result , the often-long process of sumping the shearer diagonally into each cut takes just three minutes , after which time the cutting drums , now fully sumped in the face , can make another cut .
