MINING ENGINES
Liebherr is lining up the first D9816 engine retrofit option for a
T 284 mining truck this year
The machines , equipped with Scania DC9 and DC13 engines , deliver an improvement in fuel efficiency , an even stronger performance , as well as low total cost of ownership , the company says .
Both haulers come with an up to 7 % fuel consumption reduction when compared with the Stage IV engine . Equipped with a Variable Geometry Turbo , the new Stage V engine allows for faster response at all engine speeds and an efficient combustion performance . This helps improve operators ’ efficiency while keeping the total cost of ownership low , Terex said .
The TA300 and TA400 Stage V engine ’ s aftertreatment system uses SCR technology to remove the need for exhaust gas recirculation . This way no exhaust gas is returned to the combustion chamber of the engine , helping improve efficiency and durability . The diesel oxidation catalyst and a large-capacity DPF ensure the engine meets the Stage V standards . The haulers also come with three-stage aspirated air filtration , which provides increased engine protection to lengthen maintenance intervals .
The first Stage V 28-t-payload TA300 and 38-tpayload TA400 have already been delivered to the first customers in Europe , according to Terex Trucks . for demanding conditions , with corrosion , heat and water resistance ,” Sandvik said .
A new feature in the Stage V engine is the modulating engine brake , which enables the operator to adjust the engine braking power , allowing for better control of vehicle speed downhill while minimising brake and transmission overheating and brake wear . Both the modulating engine brake and the passive regeneration contribute to high uptime of the equipment , Sandvik says .
Added benefits of the Stage V engines include high altitude operating capability – up to plus- 3,500 m above sea level – and lower noise levels compared with previous Stage IV engines .
Normet ’ s new L-Series platform of underground mining and tunnelling equipment is also equipped with Volvo Penta Stage V engine technology .
While this is the first time Normet has used Volvo Penta engines , its engine rollout could stretch to 12 different products including transmixers , agitators , fuel , water , multi-purpose and material carriers , a sprayer , dumper and
charging unit .
The two companies worked closely together to ensure the engine solution and equipment worked seamlessly in the most challenging underground conditions . Volvo Penta customised its Stage V solution to meet Normet ’ s specific requirements , taking part in factory and field testing at the Pyhäsalmi mine in Finland and helping to train Normet employees on the new engine and aftertreatment system .
In Poland , meanwhile , a 60 t BELAZ-7555I dump truck equipped with a Stage V Volvo Penta engine was recently tested . This saw a 16 litre TWD1683VE Volvo Penta engine of almost 585 kW installed on the truck .
The trials , during which the BELAZ truck equipped with engine demonstrated excellent efficiency , power , cost effectiveness and reliability , were held at a limestone mine in the country operated by Ozarow Group , BELAZ said .
Earlier this year , Terex Trucks also came out with Stage V versions of its TA300 and TA400 articulated haulers , launching the products at the Hillhead Digital event .
Liebherr ’ s 2020 milestones
Liebherr Engines had a busy 2020 , introducing new Tier 4 Final engine configurations for its PR 776 Litronic crawler dozer and for the R 9100B , R 9150B and R 9800 excavators , matching new emissions regulations . The PR 776 is powered by a Liebherr 12-cylinder , 565 kW D9512 A7 Stage V engine
The newest addition to the excavator line up , the R 9600 , was launched this year . It is powered by two QSK50 Cummins engines available in Tier 4 Final / Stage V compliant versions with the latest SCR aftertreatment technology .
On the haulage side , 2021 could see the first D9816 engine retrofit option commissioned on a T 284 mining truck , Liebherr said in its 2020 annual report . This V-16 engine comes with a rated power of 2,000-3,600 kW and maximum torque of 19,625 Nm . It is also available in Tier 4 Final configuration .
Re-examining engine options
Another manufacturer that believes the internal combustion engine still has plenty of life in it yet is Caterpillar .
The OEM and engine maker established its Dynamic Gas Blending™ ( DGB ) technology several years ago and , after initial success at a major gold mine in Mexico , has now started to gain more traction with miners looking at the type of ‘ bridge ’ decarbonisation options Cummins ’ Lintereur mentioned .
