Forward looking blasting

BME ’ s long-established innovation of using high levels of processed used oil in its bulk emulsion is a good example of its contribution to the circular economy in mining mines to ensure the highest levels of safety on their sites , also providing training to their employees on safe and efficient blasting techniques . Our incorporation of customers ’ used oil in our emulsion explosives reduces their environmental risk and contributes to the circular economy . Our leading blasting technology allows mines to achieve quality blasts which improve the overall performance of their operations – including energy efficiency and carbon footprint . Well planned and economically executed blasts mean more efficient loading and hauling and more streamlined crushing and milling . All this contributes to lower electricity and fossil fuel consumption , less carbon emissions and a more sustainable and profitable operation .
Paul Moore spoke to BME Managing Director Joe Keenan about the vital role that quality blasting plays in the circular economy , and how BME ’ s technologies pave the way for smarter mining that will do its part in preserving the planet

As forward-looking mines pursue higher productivity and efficiencies in the context of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals , they expect their technology partners to be on the same page . South Africabased blasting and explosives leader BME – part of the JSE-listed Omnia Group – says it has for decades been pursuing innovation alongside environmental responsibility . technologies , our communities and our plant – aiming towards creating a better world . It also means collaborating with the SDG-related initiatives of our customers . Daily , we work with

PM : Is this exemplified by your success in using used oil in your formulations ? Is there potential for this program to be expanded further ? JK : BME ’ s long-established innovation of using high levels of processed used oil in our bulk emulsion is a good example of our contribution to the circular economy in mining . By using our customers ’ waste product as an input to our explosives , we ensure environmentally responsible disposal and lower our customers ’ risk of contamination . Our in-house technology turns this waste into a cost-effective fuel oil alternative – delivering a highly stable and robust emulsion matrix for high performance blasting results . Our quality processes ensure that only pre-qualified used oil batches are included in our emulsion , to ensure that the product meets our specifications and delivers optimal results . As part of our continuous improvement programme , we are optimising our used oil technology and supply
PM : How can blasting and explosives technology companies help mining companies in achieving sustainability goals ? JK : BME ’ s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals ( SDGs ) – aligned with the vision of the Omnia Group – helps ensure that we support the SDG efforts of our mining customers . Our focus as a blasting and explosives company is on those goals where we can achieve the most impact , so our initiatives relate to decent work and economic growth ; industry , innovation and infrastructure ; responsible production and consumption ; and partnerships for the goals . This guides our ongoing investment in our
