Murray & Roberts Training Academy ’ s new engineering centre will play a vital role in raising skills levels among operators , servicemen , artisans and apprentices capacity has been similarly reduced . Demand for training remains strong , however , with the engineering centre for TMM training already busy with its first class of apprentices .
MRTA ’ s simulation facilities for training operators on mechanised machinery include equipment based on motion platforms to deliver realistic pitch-and-roll effects . Operators ’ machine inspection skills are enhanced using virtual reality technology as an added simulation technique , allowing the full competency requirement of the learner to be covered .
“ This training is then coupled to learning in our well-equipped mock-up facilities , to determine the learner ’ s competence and capability ,” he says .
As South African underground mines aim to raise productivity with the increased use of mechanised machinery like roof bolters , drill rigs and load-haul dumpers , the engineering centre will play a vital role in raising skills levels among operators , servicemen , artisans and apprentices .
“ The country does not have enough suitably trained and experienced artisans to keep the growing number of TMMs well maintained and fully operational ,” says Pretorius .
Hoist operator training
Redpath Canada Ltd has developed and tested a prototype hoist control system simulator . The Redpath Hoist Control Simulator ( RHCS ) consists of a portable console that fits into a custom shipping case . It can be programmed with the specific operating parameters of any given hoist plant .
It will be used to test functionality of new hoist programs , pre-commission hoist control software off critical path , and train new hoist operators prior to arriving at the mine site . The benefits of debugging programs and shortening the ramp up period for hoist operator training on newly installed hoists , off the construction critical path , was a critical driver in its development . Currently , hoist operator training is carried out concurrent with hoist installation and commissioning . Redpath believes the use of the simulator adds a significant layer of safety , removing the operating training period away from the critical installation commissioning period , allows the testing and vetting of program operating parameters , and an overall schedule and cost saving to any new hoist installation .
The unit will also play a key role in the training of new hoist operators , in a safe and non performance affecting manner . As the ever increasing industry skills shortfall continues , it is envisaged that the RHCS will be instrumental in preparing the operators of the future , whether it be a shaft sinking function or mine operation / production scenario . “ The unit saw its first functional testing recently at the Canadian University Mining Games , where its ease of use and quick operating learning curve , proved to be one of the highlights of the games according to participants .
