Winder attachments for the world
Becker Mining South Africa is a leading supplier of
mine winder attachments to the international
mining industry and told IM it has built a
worldwide reputation for quality of design,
manufacture and service. The product range
covers the complete rope attachment
requirements for any drum or friction winder as
well as guide rope attachments, maintenance
equipment, jack catch systems and shaft sinking
attachments.
Rope attachments are primarily used to
terminate mine winding ropes and to connect
these to a conveyance. They also serve to protect
personnel and installations in the event of an
Highest performance hoist ropes
Teufelberger-Redaelli's unique 7Mine hoist rope design continues to impress customers in Canada
and South Africa says Harald Schoisswohl, Head of Mining at Teufelberger-Redaelli. A longtime
7Mine customer in Canada was able to further increase the rope service life of the latest set of
7Mine ropes on its double drum winder (production winder, 3 rope layers, ~1,200 m deep shaft). In
comparison to the last set, they experienced an increase of some 50% in rope service life.
Teufelberger-Redaelli says that they have not made any changes to the rope. The customer applied
significantly more back tension during the rope install, which improved the situation in the dead
wraps significantly. Before switching over to the 7Mine ropes, the mine was using conventional
triangular strand ropes. With the 7Mine Teufelberger-Redaelli says it wants to offer its customers
the possibility to switch from a triangular strand rope to a state of the art high performance hoist
rope with the benefits of substantially less rope torque, increased bending fatigue performance,
similar wear resistance and a very moderate and predictable rope deterioration process (no sudden
rope failures). “Besides all these benefits, the 7Mine is able to significantly outperform triangular
strand ropes in service life, even though Teufelberger-Redaelli is not aiming for new world records
in mining – reliability and usability are more important for the rope manufacturer’says
Schoisswohl, since unexpected downtime of a shaft is one of the most expensive situations a mine
can experience. Another 7Mine customer in South Africa also reports very positive performance
values in comparison to the previously used triangular strand rope (winze production winder,
double drum, 3 rope layers, 51 mm diameter ropes, 1,000 m deep shaft). The rope has been in
service now for 27 months, still shows little loss of metallic area, relatively low lay
length changes and very low torque built up. Based on the findings
during the last rope inspection in June 2020 it is expected that
the rope can be kept in service for quite some time.
Teufelberger-Redaelli points out that every
triangular strand rope customer can
switch over to a 7Mine rope without
any disadvantages since both ropes
have a very similar rope weight.
The 7Mine rope has
outperformed expectations at mines in

overwind. On friction winders the
attachments are designed to
balance the load carrying
between multiple ropes.
The Becker Mining rope
attachment equipment is
available to suit different rope
diameters ranging from 16 to 64
mm in diameter with safe working
loads rated accordingly. The
equipment is custom designed to
suit the various different types of
mine winders (single drum,
double drum, Blair Multi Rope
and friction winders).
“The company has been
supplying this equipment into the
mining industry for over 100 years
and thus ensuring that winding
happens safely and efficiently. The
product range includes safety
detaching hooks and
components, friction winder
attachments, cappels, clamps,
compensating gear and a variety
of miscellaneous equipment. Our
rope attachment equipment is extensively used in
South African mining industry as well various
mining operations throughout Africa, into Canada,
the US, Mexico, South America, Australia and
fairly recently into Mongolia.”
All the rope attachments comply with
government mining regulations and meet or
exceed local mining house specifications as well
as complying with any international regulations in
place in the various counties where the equipment
is used. Tests are performed at various critical
stages of production to ensure that the company's
own high standards, as well as those of the mining
customers are met.
Materials used in manufacture all comply with
essential requirements of fatigue strength,
ductility and toughness, with the steel
ultrasonically examined before and after
machining for imperfections and defects.
After manufacture the equipment is proof load
tested and then subjected to ultrasonic and
magnetic crack-detection to ensure it is
completely free from defects which would impair
its performance and safety.
Becker Mining South Africa concludes: “Our inhouse
designed products have been proven to
exceed their design specifications in destruction
tests carried out by the CSIR Mine Hoisting
Technology Research Unit. Becker Mining South
Africa is proud of its reputation as the leading
supplier of mine winding and guide rope
attachments to the mining industry, and is firmly
committed to ensuring its customers continue to
obtain the products they need for fail-safe, reliable
shaft transportation.” IM
