MINING TRUCKS copper mine site. There are more than 65 Cummins engines operating at the mine located an altitude of 4,400 m. Higher than the base camp for Mt Everest, Cummins says its engines “deliver high reliability and outstanding durability, without losing power or torque. Varying in size from 19 l to 60 l the engines support applications such as excavators, dump trucks, power generators, drillings and bulldozers.” Soon, Julong mine will also be installing 78L engines to meet the higher power needs at the site. The Inner Mongolia North Hauler (NHL) 240 t ultra-class haul trucks of model NTE260 powered by Cummins QSK60 engine have continuous uptime in this severe environment making it the top engine of choice at Julong. “The QSK60 leverages robust engine design, sophisticated controls, and extended maintenance intervals to improve fuel economy and operating costs down at the site.” IM recently visited the NHL factory in Baotou in China, and the company mentioned that the quality of Cummins engines and especially the service support were a significant factor in their use for much of its large NTE truck range. “In addition to great products, Cummins has the advantage of employing dedicated team members to support the maintenance and operations needs at the mine. Cummins maintains 12 aftermarket support team members on site.” When reflecting on the quality of support being provided, Zhao Hongbo, Cummins Service Team Leader said, "We are very proud to be the engine supplier for our customer for more than three years. We have a track record of delivering what we promise to our customers and have excellent team to execute projects for logistically difficult high-altitude locations.” “The talented and experienced Cummins’ Aftermarket support team continues to demonstrate remarkable achievements by supporting and resolving any issues on site. Cummins provides a customer focused approach and reliable power for keeping applications in some of the harshest environments in a world Always On.” MTU digital solutions The Rolls-Royce business unit Power Systems is strengthening its activities to expand the digital services for the customers. The Digital Solutions team, established in 2017, is being expanded, and a data and analytics competence center is currently being set up in Munich. Since the beginning of 2018, experts have been working jointly in different time zones at Customer Care Centers for MTU products across five locations - Singapore, Novi (Michigan), Suzhou, Augsburg and Friedrichshafen. They provide 24/7 support to ensure full availability for customer requests operating MTU propulsion systems. The new Digital Solutions division as well as the new Customer Care Centers are part of the current initiative by the Rolls-Royce business unit Power Systems to transform its global customer service. “We intend to deliver an exceptionally high customer-focused improvement in both our services and our products with our new service and digital strategy,” said Andreas Schell, CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems. “The aim of this transformation is to develop into a complete solutions provider to fully support our customers.” “We are developing digital products and services that are generating significant customer benefits,” said Jürgen Winterholler, who leads the Digital Solutions division. The first digital tools, MTU Go! Act and MTU Go! Manage, are already available for Series 2000 and Series 4000 engines used in mining vehicles. Connecting up the systems via data loggers will enable both experts and customers to monitor the engines remotely, schedule maintenance work and determine the availability of spare parts, analyse operating data and derive what action is to be recommended to improve the use and operation of products. “Cyber security and data protection have been assigned the highest priority. This is an area where we also benefit from the experience gained in the course of the last 20 years by Rolls-Royce in the aerospace industry,” Winterholler added.
