available, it is ground-breaking in its class. It
provides substantial savings in both capital and
operational expenditure and provides remarkable
improvements in working conditions and thereby
safety.”
The system is based on the 2nd Generation
HALO 1 Constellation Series. The Series launched
in 2017 is the flagship range of the HALO LED
strip light series and is considered to be the most
technologically advanced lighting system in its
class. It is available in two voltage ranges namely
220V (200VAC-240VAC) and the 110V (90VAC-
130VAC). The design consists of specialised cable
jumpers available in lengths of 1 m, 2.5 m and 5
m (custom lengths also available) which are
factory fitted on each end with IP68 adaptors;
these adaptors enable the cables to be coupled
together in any configuration to achieve any
length desired. These lengths are followed by
HALO T-Pieces or 4-Way pieces which are also
complete with the IP68 adaptors which facilitates
the continuation of the cable length and
simultaneously the inclusion of any length of
HALO LED strip lighting.
Comparable testing was done on the existing
conventional lighting system in the Booysendal
chromite mine in Mpumalanga, South Africa. The
existing conventional lighting systems consisted
of double tube fluorescent light fittings with a
Wattage of 24 Watts LED per globe fitted at
intervals of 10 m, while the electrical
infrastructure was provided by means of 6 mm 3
core cable with steel wire armouring and low
halogen PVC exterior. The total energy consumed
by conventional lighting with an assumed power
factor of 0.8 over 150 m length was calculated at
864 Watts. Total energy consumed by the HALO
DAISY CHAIN for a 1 + 5 configuration with a
power factor 0.9 over a length of 150 m is
calculated at 560 Watts providing a saving of
56%.
Installation of conventional lighting of 150 m
using a conservative estimate involved five full
days with labour as follows: 1 x supervisor (part
time), 1 x electrician (full time) and five assistants
(full time) making up 285 man hours. Installation
of the HALO DAISY CHAIN of 150 m has been
confirmed at 1.5 hours with labour of: 1 x
electrician (part time) and two assistants (full
time) making for 3.5 hours and a total saving of
98.77%.
“The conventional lighting systems are
subjected to ‘continuous on’ without switching
off which is the normal operating condition for
mining which is very damaging to the lifespan of
any lighting systems, further aggravated by the
hot and humid underground environment
resulting in drastically reduced lifespan and
general poor lighting levels in accelerated
timeframes. These factors result in continuous
repair work on these lighting systems. The HALO
DAISY CHAIN is designed and manufactured
specifically to thrive in the underground
environments with an expected lifespan of up to
a decade or more.”
The HALO INSTALLATION CLIP is another
recent innovation, which has been developed to
provide a tailor-made installation option that is
engineered exclusively for all the HALO LED Strip
Lighting Systems, providing a lightweight but
very robust in construction fixing method that
enables a rapid and proficient installation method
for HALO. The clip is designed with a slot opening
on the underside of the clip, through which the
PVC straps can be inserted and then fastened
onto the existing infrastructure; this slot is
designed with 4 entrance and exit windows which
allows the clip to be fitted in such a way as to
allow a vertical or horizontal HALO installation.
The PVC straps should then be tied to any
existing infrastructure and held firmly in place.
Each of them weighs 2.5 g and they are made
from flame retardant polycarbonate UL94-VO.
The clip should be installed apart at 500 mm
intervals and once the PVC straps are properly
tensioned & the clips securely fastened to the
infrastructure, the HALO LED Lighting is then
placed within the clip and lightly tensioned by
hand to remove any sagging. Thereafter the
topside cover is pushed down firmly over the LED
lighting to clip into the underside part, providing
a snug and secure fastening for the HALO LED
Lighting ensuring ideal support. IM
