Track to protect
Following a major disaster in 2014 the Turkish government mandated human tracking at coal mines throughout the country. ATUT working with nanotron Technologies delivered one of the most advanced systems of its type for the Park Thermic mine
When an explosion hit the Soma coal mine near the town of Soma in the Manisa Province of Turkey on March
13, 2014, 301 miners died. The underground mine fire that followed continued to burn for another two days hindering rescue operations by thick smoke. In response to the disaster the Turkish government implemented key changes in the law mandating the use of human tracking in underground mines throughout the country. Among the first to respond was the Park Thermic Coal Mine 500 km East of Soma in Nallihan-Ankara. Its fully automated underground mining facility produces 6 Mt of lignite per year feeding the nearby Çayırhan Power Plant which has close to 5,000 MW of electric power generation capacity. Since May of 2017 one of the most advanced mining location systems for people and assets has been running at Park Thermic.
The tender proposal that Park Thermic issued in October 2015 listed a few challenges. Amongst them was scalability throughout the tunnels covering four excavation blocks and real time tracking of all miners in each shift regardless of their actual position. All system components needed to be explosion-proof according to ATEX standards and meet stringent reliability criteria in order to function 24 hours a day, 7 days a week without any interruption.
Coal markets were under severe pressure at the time. Hence implementation cost added yet another challenge. Still the number of responses that Park Thermic got was overwhelming. Most companies active in the field of mine automation and mine safety from all over the world submitted their proposals. After a selection process involving several stages, ATUT of Katowice( Poland) was awarded the business.“ Mechanised mining has been the driving force for cost savings through automation and process optimisation as well as fulfilling the most critical moral responsibility we have of proving better protection and safety for the mine workers in their daily working environment,” comments Michal Szebesta, Project Lead at the Park Thermic Coal Mine and Member of the Board of ATUT.
To roll out the new tracking solution most efficiently, ATUT assembled a cross-functional
