Numa hammers deliver in US coal
As a major coal provider, Reading Anthracite in Wadesville, Pennsylvania, USA is very experienced in blasthole drilling and has seen all kinds of DTH equipment throughout the years. This experience allows them to quickly evaluate products to determine which ones will stand up to their demanding drilling environment. According to drilling technology company Numa, this was the case when DTH drilling expert and Numa Regional Manager Ted Foust introduced Numa’ s P65 hammer to them.
Numa’ s P65 hammer together with a Numa bit was praised for its ease of maintenance
Reading Anthracite conducted an evaluation using an Atlas Copco ROC L8 drill rig with an 850 / 350( 401 / 24.1) compressor. The drill plan called for drilling multiple 6¾ in( 171 mm) holes through the Llewellyn formation of fine to coarse grained sandstone. Average depth ranged from 40 to 150 ft( 12-46 m) which were standard conditions for the mine environment. The bit used was a QL60 6¾ in CCCV HRD.
Drilling was started with the hammer running at 300 psi( 20.6 bar).“ At the outset, it was apparent that penetration rates were comparable if not a little faster than the other hammers in use. However, Numa’ s P65 hammer provided better overall performance in longevity as it easily outlasted the competitors with longer hammer life. Furthermore, the Numa hammer was much easier to maintain.”
“ Numa’ s P65 hammer ran as well as Ted advertised”, said Josh Derrick, Reading Anthracite Company Drilling & Blasting Manager.“ It was fast but what it really excelled at was how well it stood up against the hard elements we drill in every day. It is a work horse. Another big benefit was how easy the hammer tears down for maintenance and rebuild. The Numa 6 in hammer definitely saves us time and money.” IM
