14 CONTENTS NOVEMBER 2017 8 DRIVES AND CONTROLS Application of smart technology, new service centres, and new tailored solutions for heavy industry are some of the developments in the mining drives and controls industry, reports Paul Moore 24 8 14 HIGH PROFILE – GEOBRUGG Protecting miners and mining assets against rockfall and failures is crucial and physical barriers in the form of fencing and mesh represents the last line of defence. Paul Moore spoke to several global managers at Geobrugg about its surface and underground solutions 34 16 BIG DATA & DIGITALISATION Managing increasing volumes of data in tandem with digitalisation is a major challenge facing today’s mining industry but one that needs to be overcome to increase efficiency and optimise real time mine management. Paul Moore reports 24 FLOTATION Bigger cells, retrofits, reagent news and more: John Chadwick reports on the latest flotation technology developments 34 LEACHING AND SX/EW There have been some interesting breakthroughs in the application of heap leaching and SX/EW, John Chadwick reports 42 ROCK TOOLS Paul Moore gets the lowdown on bit wear plus reports on optimisation of drilling through digital tools and other developments in rock drill consumables as well as a new drilling service agreement 50 50 HIGH PROFILE – BELAZ Paul Moore spoke to BELAZ about progress with new fleets worldwide, including Indonesia, South Africa, Poland and Morocco 42 www.im -mining. com COVER: BELAZ NOVEMB ER 201 The cover image this month shows a BELAZ water sprinkler of model 76135, here operating at one of OCP's phosphate mining sites in Morocco, where it was supplied by local BELAZ dealer Soberma. The model has a tank capacity of 119 m 3 and is powered by an AC-DC electric drive and Cummins KTA 38-C engine. OCP has noted the comfort of the air-conditioned cabin and the operator ergonomics. The model is also very robust and uses a technology for watering that is much more advanced than that offered by competitors. It runs on a centrifugal pump with hydrostatic drive, having both a side spraying system with two fan shaped sprayers and four rear fan shaped sprayers, all controlled from the cab with actuation valves, supplying a sprinkling zone width of 24.5 m. The truck also has a hydraulic water gun at the front and drums at the rear with hoses for firefighting, as well as a foam generator set www.belaz.by/eng AROUND THE WORLD 3 The Leader 4 World Prospects I Info n f o r rme m e d a and n d i in-d n ept h editor FLOTAT IO DEVELO N PMENTS DRIVES & CONT ROLS ial on the wo rld min ing ind ustry LEACHI NG AND SX/EW ROCK TO OLS BIG DA TA AND DIGITA LISATION 52 & IBC Forthcoming Events and Classifieds NOVEMBER 2017 | International Mining 1 7
