DRIVES AND CONTROLS
Smart technology is being applied to drives and motors in the mining industry just as it is everywhere else, to help increase performance and lower costs. Hägglunds Inside Intelligence, a new connectivity suite for Hägglunds hydraulic direct drive systems, Bosch Rexroth believes puts it at the cutting edge of performance optimisation. Through smart technologies, this growing range of products and services offers mining customers many forms of direct access to Bosch Rexroth expertise.
First presented at Hannover Messe 2017, Hägglunds Inside Intelligence is a modern portfolio of services that connect a Hägglunds drive system with Bosch Rexroth expertise. Using smart technology within the drive system – combined with mobile devices and interactive solutions – it gives users direct and secure access to over a half-century of experience.
“ The technology is the tool, but not the focus,” says Wolfram Ulrich, Vice President Sales for Hägglunds Products at Bosch Rexroth.“ What matters is how we use it to help customers increase their drive utilisation and productivity while lowering their cost of ownership. Through Hägglunds Inside Intelligence, our experienced experts can provide customers with instant analysis, realtime advice and condition monitoring, as well as predictive maintenance and other forms of proactive support.”

Application of smart technology, new service centres, and new tailored solutions for heavy industry are some of the developments in the mining drives and controls industry, reports Paul Moore
enable condition monitoring by establishing a link between the drive system and Bosch Rexroth expertise. Hägglunds CM provides entry-level monitoring and logging, while Hägglunds CMp with ODiN offers a complete health index, including historical data, trending and deeper analytics. The latter’ s secure and encrypted data communication lets Bosch Rexroth – or the customer’ s own skilled engineers – look within the drive to optimise performance and initiate condition-based maintenance.
Hägglunds InSight Live saves time and money by using augmented reality to connect Bosch Rexroth service experts with the local maintenance team on-site. Through a mobile device or a pair of video goggles, central service experts literally see what the onsite team sees. In real time, they can provide instruction and interact visually to guide service actions.
“ Hägglunds Inside Intelligence not only fulfills today’ s needs, but also fits well into the developing framework of Industry 4.0. In bringing connectivity to the drive, it puts tools for improving business at the very heart of industrial processes. By connecting their equipment with Bosch Rexroth expertise, customers can realise the full potential of their Hägglunds drive system.”
Developments at Bonfiglioli
Bonfiglioli, a leader in the manufacturing of gearboxes, gearmotors and drive systems for mining applications, this year presented the drive controller Active Cube 7 from the proven
inverter series Active Cube with an improved power range of 160 or 200 kW with water cooling. The drives are available for 400 volt supply. The compact ACU 7 converters in the 160 kW version have a high-power density of 2 kW / dm ³. The 200 kW water-cooled version of the new ACU 7 drives achieves the extraordinary power-density value of 2.5 kW / dm 3. The improved ACU 7 drives are cited as being particularly suitable for medium and heavy-duty industries such as material handling and mining.
“ Besides the known features, Bonfiglioli’ s new ACU 7 inverter solutions offer further options such as control features with 32 PLC function blocks and 16 variables, as well as several feedback sensors. On top of this, there are a wide range of digital and analogue outputs and inputs inclusive of PTC, PT100 or KTY temperature sensors. The standard communication protocol portfolio like Profinet, Ethernet IP, EtherCAT, VABus / TCP and CANopen is also available in the ACU 7 inverters.” The safety function‘ Safe Torque Off’ comes as an integrated and standard feature too.
For many applications, the company says the new and more effective ACU 7 drives represent a benchmark in the high-power range, characterised by flexibility, open communication and the smallest required assembly space.
Bonfiglioli also this year launched the new planetary gear 300M series for industrial applications. The 300M series, with its optimised reduction stages, stands for highest performance, a higher torque density for the same compact dimensions and is available in 20 sizes with an output torque of 1.3 to 1,300 kNm. The planetary drives of the 300M series are equipped with newly designed planet bearings, which grant up to 50 % more torque at high numbers of cycles. The new planetary gear 300M series by Bonfiglioli is fully interchangeable with the well-known planetary gear 300 series and is suitable for integrated geared motors, IEC and NEMA electric and hydraulic motors.
Optionally, Bonfiglioli offers a compact selfcooling system for the entire planetary gear series, which increases the thermal performance by three times. The self-cooling system is robust and connects directly to the motor in a reliable way, allowing use of the full mechanical power without needing further external cooling circuits.
“ The 300M series, thanks to the enhancement of the planet bearings arrangements, ensures compactness, cost savings as well as up to 20 % more lifetime and reliability. With the optional integrated selfcooling system, the new 300M series allows either a saving of at least one size or is an outstanding alternative to helical gearboxes. In addition, this integrated option is
