A REVOLUTIONARY INNOVATION
CONVEYING work, and improves the idler roll life on the return side. Flat turnover has been the dominant belt turnover method. For extra wide and high duty belts, the concern is the flat turnover requires long turnover length, large space, and causes extra sag and stress in the belt. Troughed belt turnover thus is introduced to address these concerns, where the belt is folded into a troughed or semi-circular shape by guide rollers during the turnover. However, there isn’ t a clear and effective method to analyse the troughed turnover, due its increased complexity. There are a wide range of mechanical designs to induce the troughed belt turn-over, without the clear understanding of their effectiveness. A study to be presented by Conveyor Dynamics at the forthcoming SME Annual Conference & Expo in Denver from February 19-22 uses the finite element method to analyse a troughed belt turnover. The purpose is to establish an analysis tool and initial study on the intrinsic nature of the troughed turnover.
United Bulk Terminal’ s coal handling facility in Davant, Louisiana, utilises a reversing conveyor to load and unload vessels at the port. Voith is now installing two Voith 562TPKL-BiDi couplings that can efficiently operate the belt in either direction and will help nearly double the productivity.
Elsewhere, in 2014, SsangYong Cement consulted with Voith to increase the conveyed tonnage from the main quarry to the cement plant. Voith started with an initial analysis of the conveyor system to outline project requirements especially for the 12.8 km oneflight conveyor- one of the five longest single conveyors worldwide. This SME paper outlines the process Voith instituted to implement the Voith TurboBelt DriveControl, and overcome local and regional material handling process challenges to reach production goals. " Features like cascaded smart control logics and selflearning capabilities will allow these facilities to realise increased belt life, reduced wear and maintenance demand, and the ability to align belt conveyor drives onto one controls platform."
Voith also recently unveiled its new TurboBelt 500 TPXL fluid coupling at MINExpo in Las Vegas, in 2016. The fill-controlled coupling is the first model in the new TPXL family, which combines the advantages of the proven hydrodynamic drive principle with intelligent control technology. The integrated controller makes it possible to adapt the output torque of the coupling exactly to the startup parameters of the belt conveyor system. In addition, Voith ' s engineers have been able to considerably reduce the dimensions of the new coupling, so that the TurboBelt 500 TPXL only requires half the volume of conventional coupling types for the same force transmission. In addition to the operational advantages, the new series of
couplings also offers attractive procurement and operating costs.
Also within the Voith portfolio the TurboBelt TPXL fill-controlled coupling is complemented by components over the entire conveying process such as the intermediate drive TurboBelt TT Linear Booster Drive, storage loops, tension stations and slide and chute systems. Today, this already offers diverse possibilities for optimising belt conveyor systems with respect to total cost of ownership and capital expenditures. Furthermore the wide product range opens a perspective for the future with regard to automation concepts and comprehensive condition monitoring.

When a primary conveyor goes down, costly repairs and a loss of valuable production time are incurred. Frequently, the interruption in conveyor operations is caused by a premature bearing failure on a pulley. Changing a pulley bearing can be a dangerous, lengthy, and labour intensive activity. A paper from SKF outlines how sealed bearings coupled with a proactive and predictive maintenance program have been shown to virtually eliminate premature bearing failures and, at the same time, dramatically reduce grease consumption; consequently reducing the need for maintenance, which improves worker safety and allows them to focus their time on other duties. This paper will explore the causes of
