MARINE MINING
works system on board the vessel .
GMC light weight mining risers are utilised for the recovery of mineralised ore from the seabed to surface . GMC ’ s snaplay connection enables the riser to be rapidly deployed and connected to the subsea excavation equipment for recovery of the minerals . The connected riser can be stored on the vessel and installed without the need for any additional vessels or top drive equipment , simply using the vessel crane and GMC ’ s installation tooling , taking up minimal deck space .
GMC provides the complete turnkey riser package including connected riser joints , buoyancy modules , handling and installation equipment . In addition , GMC can provide the complete derrick facility to handle riser joints
GMC recently completed delivery of the Riser and Lifting System ( RALS ) to Nautilus Minerals
with flexible connections from the surface vessel to the seabed machines .
In June 2016 , GMC completed delivery of its Riser and Lifting System ( RALS ) for Nautilus Minerals . The Riser and Lifting System ( RALS ) is designed to lift the mineralised material to the Production Support Vessel ( PSV ) using a Subsea Slurry Lift Pump ( SSLP ) and a vertical riser system . The seawater / rock is delivered into the SSLP at the base of the riser , where it is pumped to the surface via a gravity tensioned riser suspended from the PSV . The proposed positive displacement pump is designed and built by GE Hydril .
Blue Nodules and VAMOS
On February 1 , 2016 , a European consortium launched a new Horizon 2020 project : Blue Nodules . This project addresses the challenge of creating a viable and sustainable value chain to retrieve polymetallic nodules from the ocean
floor . It will develop and test new highlyautomated and sustainable technologies for deep-sea mining with minimal environmental pressures . The technical side of the project is dedicated to subsea harvesting equipment in addition to the insitu seafloor and sea surface processing of polymetallic nodules . The operational aspect focuses on sea operations and logistics , including compliance with , and development of , rules and regulations , and the business case . The independent , dedicated environmental part will focus on environmental pressures and on an Environmental Impact Assessment . In all areas , Blue Nodules will build on the results of the European FP7 projects , MIDAS and Blue Mining and the EcoMining pilot action funded by the JPI Oceans initiative of the European science foundations .
Rodney Norman , Director at IHC Mining , which is coordinating the project , explained that Blue Nodules is significant because it allows the European consortium to expand technological development beyond the vertical transportation system of Blue Mining to the seafloor mining vehicle and other components of the system .
On February 9-10 , IHC Mining , part of Royal IHC in The Netherlands , hosted the Blue Nodules kick-off meeting at its premises in Kinderdijk .
A separate Horizon 2020 project , ¡ VAMOS ! ( Viable Alternative Mine Operating System ) aims to design and build a robotic , underwater mining
