LINERS AND WEAR RESISTANCE
Not wearing
you down
Some of the newest ideas
and technologies to keep
components at their best
ear parts optimisation serves as the
backbone of every shutdown, says
Metso. The company says its focus is
two-fold: “Increasing availability to get your
equipment up and running after a shutdown to
minimise lost production time; and improving
efficiency by optimising your process equipment
wear and spare parts for longevity and their
highest productivity rate.”
Metso’s Life Cycle Services (LCS) takes the
entire range of services that Metso provides and
bundles them into customisable, easily
manageable packages ranging from the basics
to more complete solutions, depending on
needs. The packages are equipped to cover a
single-event shutdown or span multiple years,
measured against strict key performance
indicators (KPI).
The four packages are scheduled inspections,
shutdown & wear parts optimisation, shutdown
& process optimisation and maintenance &
process optimisation.
Shutdowns should be measured and
improved on a continual basis. If any aspect of a
shutdown isn’t synchronised, delays can set in
quickly, at which point mines risk losing
production volumes and revenues, Metso warns.
An LCS shutdown and wear parts optimisation
solution means mines get one supplier
performing all components of a shutdown from
start to finish. With this package, Metso takes
responsibility for reducing downtime due to
shutdowns over the life of the contract. It also
looks to improve efficiency by optimising wear

parts for longevity and their highest production
capacity.
In South America a number of operations are
benefitting from Duratray customised solutions.
Duratray LatAm has been awarded contracts to
manufacture 24 lightweight steel dump bodies
for Komatsu 930E and Caterpillar 797F ultraclass trucks at the Chuquicamata (Codelco) and
Centinela (Antofagasta Minerals) open pit
copper mines in northern Chile.
The Duratray Chilean workshop has also built
FX lightweight steel dump bodies for Caterpillar
793D trucks that were transported to the San
Juan province of Argentina, for a large gold
mine. Although the operational width is 8.0 m,
the Duratray engineering team was able to
design a compact three-part nested layout
which reduced the width for road transport to a
more manageable value of 5.0 m.
Demonstrating the company's innovative
engineering approach to solve client needs, a
hybrid water tank and dump body was recently
completed at the Iquique workshop of Conymet
Duratray. Initially designed as a high-volume
water tank for pit de-watering operations, the
unit can later be converted to a standard rock
body for transport of ore and waste. A full
140,000 litre water tank can be discharged in
less than 90 seconds.
Further expanding the global fleet of 6x6
articulated dump trucks with Duratray
suspended dump bodies; three new units have
been commissioned on Caterpillar 740B trucks
in Panama. The site has extremely high annual

rainfall (5 m) and carryback is a major issue with
cohesive material such as saprolite. Also the
steel dump bodies from the OEM tend to be too
small to carry full payloads with low density
weathered material, so the Duratray SDB body
has a 25% larger volumetric capacity while
being 20% lighter than OEM steel ejector
bodies.
Feedback from trials in Panama has been
positive and replicate similar success in tropical
regions such as Suriname, Guyana, Jamaica,
PNG and New Caledonia.
Underground, for Codelco’s great El Teniente
mine, Duratray has designed a high efficiency
body tray for CAT 775 trucks, with lower weight
and higher volume to carry more payload on
each trip.
Advanced ceramics
When it comes to wear resistance, advanced
ceramics are the best materials available to
extend material handling equipment life —
increasing uptime and profitability – according
to CoorsTek. A wide variety of ceramics are
available to protect metal structures and
surfaces, so CoorsTek engineered its family of
CeraSurf® alumina and silicon carbide (SiC)
