There are several different ways dialogue can be transmitted in theaters and performance venues . The movie studios do not always release films that have closed or open captioning built in . It is important to look at the venue ’ s “ Accessibility ” link on the website to verify what types of accommodations they provide for their patrons .
• American Sign Language : may be available for live performances but usually requires notifying the venue prior to the event if this accommodation is available . Examples of theaters offering this are : Paramount Theatre in Aurora , the Goodman , Steppenwolf , Elgin Community Theatre , and the Egyptian Theatre in DeKalb .
• Closed Captioning : It is becoming more common for both large and smaller theaters to offer closed captioning . These can be battery operated portable devices that attach to the armrest , are free standing , or insert into the cup holder .
• Smart Glasses : Some theaters may also offer Smart Glasses that display the real-time dialogue on the screen in the direct line of sight of the person wearing them
• Descriptive Narration : Using a headset , an audio description of the visual aspects of a movie are presented . It is recommended to ask the theatre for an audio description headset when purchasing tickets .
• Open Captioning : The text is displayed on the screen for all patrons to see . It can include sound effects such as a doorbell ringing , the speakers ’ name , as well as real-time dialogue . This is not to be confused with “ subtitles ” which is translating one language to another language .
• Listening Devices : Hearing Loop technology can be found in many theaters , which is helpful for people wearing hearing aids and cochlear implants , according to the Hearing Loss Association of America . The sound is delivered through a headset and supports those who are not wearing aids . One disadvantage is in multiplex theaters where louder sounds from an adjoining theater may be easily picked up .
• Sound / Noise Reducing Headphones : Depending on the brand , these headphones have a noise reduction rate of 20 to 26dB . Normal conversation is at 60dB , although some action films can be over 90dB and video arcades as high as 110dB , which falls within the “ danger ” zone . Many times , the previews in theaters are much louder than the films themselves . Having headphones available is also beneficial for children and adults who have auditory sensitivity . Many theaters and performance venues are now offering Sensory Friendly performances where , at a minimum , the lights are brighter , and the sound is reduced . There are helpful guides on the noiseawareness . org website about sound levels and safety awareness .
