CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2 the psychological and emotional behaviors associated with having a stroke and caregiving , it seems imperative that occupational therapy practitioners ensure they are addressing these concerns and providing the appropriate resources . Additionally , because the role of caregiving is demanding in and of itself , occupational therapy practitioners should do their best to incorporate home program suggestions that not only help to facilitate their loved one ’ s recovery but are integrated into the family ’ s daily lives and routines ( e . g ., playing a card game with the grandchildren ).
In addition to expanding educational opportunities throughout the rehabilitation process , occupational therapy practitioners should advocate for opportunities for the patient to live in the ADL apartment prior to discharge and / or participate in a weekend visit home prior to discharge , as these opportunities have been found to be extremely beneficial in identifying and addressing problems prior to discharge and have eased the transition to returning home . These experiences also provide an opportunity for a caregiver to ask the rehabilitation team questions , collaborate , problem-solve , and develop contextual strategies ; not only to enhance performance , but also to boost the caregiver ’ s sense of confidence and skill in their new role ( Luker et al ., 2017 ; Shook & Stanton , 2016 ).
