Yeats’ The Lake Isle of Innisfree. The pensive and disillusioned coming-of-age song“ Twenty One” reflects upon a difficult and transitional season.“ Somebody cause me strife and it’ s not what I was seeking,” sings O’ Riordan as cowriter Noel Hogan strums his acoustic guitar during the stripped-down“ Empty.” The evocative“ Everything I Said” and“ Disappointment” follow the tearful thread. Single“ I Can’ t Be with You” is bereft and lovelorn, but it’ s a belter. O’ Riordan’ s tremulous vocal and yodeled phrasing dance atop drummer Fergal Lawler’ s body-moving Madchester beat.“ Ridiculous Thoughts” begins with watery guitar and ethereal vocalizing before shifting into a cathartic exorcism of a bad relationship. The song’ s roots apparently reflect O’ Riordan’ s experiences with manipulative press outlets, suggesting that the“ Twister” she sings about is any writer who twisted her words to land a sensational story. Both of these songs, as well as“ Daffodil Lament” with Hogan’ s gliding and buzzing e- bow guitar, are included as bonus tracks recorded during the Cranberries’ appearance at Woodstock’ 94.
