Continued from page 10 house , and they found him . But the morning of his funeral , we were sitting in my dining room , and the light bulb above my table kept flickering , I mean really flickering , nonstop for five minutes . And in my opinion , it had to have been Kevin . Kevin ’ s girlfriend was with us at the table , and it was a message to all of us . So I ’ ve seen a few things in my life , I ’ ve seen a few shadows , and what have you . But I ’ m open to
that , and I ’ m not frightened to have witnessed things that maybe other people wouldn ’ t have seen . I mean , I ’ m not searching for things on ouija boards anymore . But when my mom passed away in 2017 , I saw some things and heard some things with her that I keep private . I was with her for 18 hours at the end , and I witnessed some things , along with my cousin and assistant , that were actually quite beautiful . And I was very alert — I haven ’ t been drunk in so many years , so what we were seeing was real ; it wasn ’ t an illusion . So I do know , in my heart and soul , that there is the other side , and I know there is an afterlife . I do sense an afterlife , for sure .
IE : In light of all this , what ’ s next for humanity ? At the beginning of lockdown , I had high hopes for a collective reset — we were all on the same page about climate change , and maybe we had a chance to turn things around . But we have learned nothing , it seems , and now we ’ re just hurtling towards our own extinction . GH : Well , Idothinkthatweareatthebeginning of the awakening at the moment , for those people that are open to it . So I ’ m sure that a lot of people on this planet are realizing
that we are awakening now , and the Fifth Dimension is here now , and we ’ re hurtling away from the Third Dimension , and I am welcoming this . And I am living my life the best I can , so I can remain grounded . And I ’ m not afraid to die anymore . Maybe I was years ago , but I ’ m not afraid at all . Do I want to die ? Of course not , because , of course , we all want to live forever . But having seen what my mom went through in those last few hours , I have absolutely no fear of death at all . Zero fear . -Tom Lanham

BOWIE AT 75 : REVIEWED
BOWIE @ 75 by Martin Popoff ( motorbooks / The Quarto Group )
Celebrating what would have been the year of David Bowie ’ s 75th birthday , veteran rock scribe Martin Popoff ’ s handsome 208-page hardbound book highlights the artist ’ s influential life and career through text and photos covering targeted events along a station-to-station trip with 75 stops . Every entry in Bowie ’ s 27-album catalog is flagged . Beyond that , Popoff set no rules .
Entry number 1 , “ Scream Like a Baby ” covers Bowie ’ s birth in 1947 and childhood . Entry number 3 , “ Boys Keep Swinging ,” retells the story of the eye injury inflicted by lifelong friend and noted album artist George Underwood that gave Bowie both a problem with depth perception and an utterly distinctive look . Entry number 75 , “ Ashes to Ashes ,” describes the early 2016 release of Blackstar and Bowie ’ s subsequent death two days later . More broadly , the book is divided into six phases of Bowie ’ s life and career : pop singer , rock star , musician , showman , rock icon , and ultimately “ artist .”
Throughout the book , words and images paint a picture of Bowie not as a mere pop icon but as a total artist and boundary pusher . Even when collaborating with established peers , Bowie was usually ahead of the curve on styles and technology and was rarely ( if ever ) a late adopter .
Key chapters are dedicated to the release of “ Space Oddity ,” glam-rock touchstone Ziggy
By Jeff Ebel
Stardust , film and television roles , the 1985 performance at global sensation Live Aid , and collaborations with artists including Iggy Pop , Lou Reed , Tina Turner , Brian Eno , and Queen . Craftily designed television spots with Bing Crosby and Klaus Nomi demonstrate how Bowie could work within the most wholesome confines of pop culture and also pull the fringes toward the mainstream . Entry 49 “ Hang Onto Yourself ” describes the tragic loss of Bowie ’ s older half-brother Terry Burns , along with Burns ’ presence in the lyrics of songs ranging from “ All the Madmen ”
to “ Black Tie , White Noise .” Another entry recalls when Bowie declined knighthood in 2003 . “ It ’ s not what I spent my life working for ,” he is quoted as saying .
The pacing of the book is dazzling , swift , and fun . It ’ s easy to become immersed in the chronological history , turning page after page . Popoff ’ s narrative is also well designed for shorter glimpses and return visits . The book comes bound in a sturdy slipcase . Extra trinkets include a previously unpublished 8x10 photo of Bowie performing circa the Serious Moonlight tour and a replica Aladdin Sane tour poster designed by Frank Kozik for a 1973 date in Osaka , Japan .
