Septembert 2019 • Volume 45, Number 10 • www.illinoisentertainer.com COVER STORY: The B-52S In 1976, Kate Pierson, poet Fred Schneider, per- cussionist Keith Strickland, singer Cindy Wilson, and her brilliant inventive guitarist brother Ricky Wilson (who would pass away in 1985 from AIDS- related causes, nearly ending the group) came up with a bare-bones, surf-echoey style that was like no other band of the era. With Island Records hon- cho Chris Blackwell producing, the band flew to the Bahamas in 1979 to track its eponymous debut, which featured such signature classics as a "Planet Claire” and “Rock Lobster,” which “Family Guy” auteur Seth MacFarlane still manages to incorpo- rate into almost every new season. It’s a tribute to the ‘60s-inspired filigrees of Wilson — combined with Schneider’s charismatic barked vocal and the girl-group harmonies of Kate and Cindy — “The B-52’s” not only holds up today, it feels like it was conceived only yesterday. See 'em at Riot Fest. 8 Page 22 -The B-52's HELLO MY NAME IS BRAD Time has been kind to Crash Test Dummies frontman Brad Roberts. First, his signature baritone — as heard on 1993's smash hit “Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm” — which ounds as rich and sonorous as ever on the group’s current reunion tour, celebrating the 25th anniversary of its landmark sophomore effort, God Shuffled His Feet. And second, there is now a classy new cachet attached. When Canadian and U.S. promoters got wind of a one-off outdoor concert the original members played in their native Winnipeg in 2016, Roberts says, everybody involved had had a blast doing it, and they seized the moment and began charting comeback concert itineraries. “They just started booking tours, and we said fine,” Roberts says. ‘And now here we are —back with bells on.” Tom Lanham talked to Roberts.
