Big Game: Pay to Play
For a sports league that generates revenues around $9 billion, the
NFL squeezes every drop of revenue from their brand and now they're
contemplating getting more. As reported in Forbes and USA Today, the
NFL is asking potential halftime acts to pay for the "privilege" of playing its halftime show, by contributing a percentage of future tour
income or by making “some other type of financial contribution,”
according to Forbes. Jeez. Fortunately, many in the music industry are
skeptical. “I don’t think you’re going to get that caliber of act—the
Rolling Stones, U2, Springsteen—to pay to play,” Gary Bongiovanni,
editor of concert data outfit Pollstar, told Forbes. “There’s no doubt
there are acts out there that would pay for exposure, but I think that’s
the wrong message for the NFL to send.” We tend to agree.
