Illinois Entertainer Record Store Day Black Friday Guide | Page 2

VINYL PICKS F or many years, the Black Friday Edition of Record Store Day was the red-headed stepchild of April's main edition of RSD. The titles were less impressive, and it seemed like an after- thought cashing in on the Record Store Day name. However, since 2012 the little brother edition that takes place after the Thanksgiving holiday has come into its own. Though the exclusive vinyl list is smaller than the spring edition, Black Friday RSD has become a complimentary sibling that can stand on its own as an event. While your family may be waiting for Black Friday 2018 to purchase TV's, clothing, or iPhones, the cool kids in the house will be ditching the unneeded material things for vinyl gold on November 23. Here's is a list of our favorite Black Friday RSD titles. Keep in mind each store orders music based on their customer's tastes and some staff favorites. Product lists are generally post- ed 3-5 days before RSD. It's financially unfeasible for a mom and pop shop to order every RSD tile, so be patient. Pick your top titles and a few back-up titles and work off your Thanksgiving calories during Record Store Day. SOUL ASYLUM The Twin Tone Years (Omnivore) Hard to remember that Soul Asylum was on the same label as the Replacements before they became an alt-rock commer- cial staple. This boxed set is co-produced by Twin/Tone Records co-founder and Replacements manager Peter Jesperson, and and Omnivore Recordings co- founder Cheryl Pawelski. The Twin/Tone Years reaches back for some of the earliest Soul Asylum recordings such as Loud Fast Rules and traces the history of the band through their pre-major label indie years. A 20-page book includes liner notes and previously unseen photos and memorabilia. The albums are being reis- sued on vinyl for the first time since their original releases, and have been restored and mastered by Grammy winning engi- neer, Michael Graves at Osiris Studio and cut by Chris Muth at Taloowa. TYPE O NEGATIVE Bloody Kisses (Roadrunner) Bloody Kisses was released in 1993 to crit- ical acclaim and became the first album for Roadrunner to reach certified Platinum status in the States. For the 25th anniversary, the record is being reissued as a stand-alone vinyl release in the U.S. for the first time and will be getting the deluxe treatment which includes an extra LP of bonus tracks making their debut on vinyl. The 3LP set will be pressed on 180g green and black swirl vinyl and come in a tri-fold direct to board Stoughton jacket. Bloody Kisses 25th Anniversary 3LP expanded edition is a Record Store Day- Black Friday exclusive limited to 5000 copies and available at participating stores in the US and Canada only. THE BYRDS Sweetheart of The Rodeo (Legacy) By the time Sweetheart Of The Rodeo was released in 1968; The Byrds had already changed the sound of rock music twice. From jangling folk-rock to experi- mental acid-rock, they always sought to push the boundaries of what rock music could be. The 1967 departure of David Crosby left a creative void filled quickly by country music-loving Gram Parsons, whose addition led Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman, and company to record an album comprised mostly of authentic country material in Nashville, with the aid of local session aces (including future Byrd Clarence White). For the first time on vinyl—and on the heels of a 50th anniversary tour of the album by original members McGuinn and Hillman—this Legacy Edition of **Sweetheart Of The Rodeo showcases this country-rock mas- terpiece alongside 28 bonus tracks, including demos, outtakes, rehearsal ver- sions and tracks by Parsons’ pre-Byrds outfit, The International Submarine Band. MUDDY WATERS More Muddy Mississippi Waters Live (Legacy) Those who lived in Chicago and the Western Suburb of Westmont may have seen Muddy perform on a bar stool in his twilight years, his body somewhat bat- tered by years of touring, hard work, and some harder living. Recorded during a club tour near the end of his storied career, 1979’s Muddy Mississippi Waters Live is a towering testament to the former Continued on on page 57 12 Continued page
