R COVER STORY : LAMB OF GOD
20 andy Blythe , leader of Lamb of God has combed through philosophy books over the pandemic — many of them dating back to ancient Rome — looking for modern solutions to mankind ’ s seemingly imminent extinction . And he partially blames our own addiction to the convenience of technology . “ We ’ ve become pretty myopic , in the sense that we only view right now the latest , greatest , most current thing that ’ s happening as the only reality that ’ s ever existed ,” he grumbles . “ So that ’ s why people ’ s attention spans and ability for critical thought has diminished so much .“ But Blythe showed a few more of his cards , like the location of his tropical retreat — Ecuador — and his initially secret mission for going there — an ambitious reforestation program he and a friend have undertaken to help reclaim crucial parts of the jungle . Lamb of God ’ s new album Omens , drops in October . Tom Lanham spoke to Blythe . HELLO MY NAME IS PETER HOOK
Mancunian musician Peter Hook ’ s primary survival skill is his totally unique bass-playing style , a melodic , stage-scraping thrum that — ever since he launched with the legendary but short-lived outfit Joy Division , then perfected it in his ensuing combo New Order ; it ’ s a sound that ’ s often been imitated but never once been equaled . But he has other similarly important abilities . A secondary skill , only tangible in sparkling , often snarky conversation with the man is his droll , rapier-sharp wit . So there ’ s nothing surprising about the hilarious preface he proffers to a recent discussion of his current Peter Hook and the Light tour — wherein he is playing Joy Division ’ s landmark two-album catalog , Unknown Pleasures and Closer , back to back two albums .
At 66 , Hook ’ s scrappy sense of humor has sustained him through some turbulent times , such as his ongoing feuds with New Order , financial and otherwise , with whom he permanently split in 2007 . After two soldout nights at Metro Chicago in August , he ’ s in demand more than ever . Tom Lanham spoke to former New Order and Joy Division bassist .
