COVER STORY: BASTILLE
It started in 2013 with Bad Blood, Bastille’s
smash debut that featured a man running terrified
in car headlights a la David Lynch’s Lost Highway,
with film-inspired tracks like “Laura Palmer” and
“Things We Lost in the Fire” alongside the signa-
ture breakthrough hit “Pompeii.”
The frontispiece of the new third effort Doom
Days, is less specific — showing a tangle of young
limbs on a blanketed motel room bed around
dawn. Or dusk, given that it’s a concept album a la
Scorsese’s After Hours concerning the protagonist’s
wild adventures one London night. And, of course,
everything he sees.
On Doom Days, Dan Smith ups the ante, creat-
ing a symphonic piece that feels like one, although
it’s subdivided into compact anthems that tell the
night-on-the-town tale, from the opening chimer
— and party launcher — “Quarter Past Midnight.”
Tom Lanham talked to Bastille's main man.

HELLO MY NAME IS RICK
What’s so funny about Rick Wakeman? Pretty much everything,
according to most of his bandmates, friends and family, and much of the
TV-watching public in his native Britain. Jon Anderson — his longtime
vocalist in prog-rock stalwarts Yes and the recent ARW spinoff — calls the
keyboardist the most hilarious man he’s ever known, and other members
swear that it’s his razor-sharp wit that makes touring tolerable. Yes fans
might know it, but he has an actual standup comedy routine that he per-
forms overseas. Currently, the man is on his first American solo tour in 13
years, featuring a show peppered with playful anecdotes, in accordance
with his new profile as a ribald raconteur. Tom Lanham spoke to
Wakeman, who comes to the Arcada Theatre October 4.
