could get a temporary passport from the post office. So Charlie and I went to Paris, missed The Sex Pistols, and then from Paris went all through Europe. And we still use that trip as a leitmotif for the rest of our life. You put out your thumb, and who knows what's going to happen. It could be terrible, or it could be great. But that was our version of Kerouac's "On The Road," that was our version of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. And it's still that sense of movement and that sense of who knows what tomorrow's gonna bring. IE: Ever get chuckleheads at your hotel that are just too stupid to stay there? JK: Well, we had one guy -- and this is the IE: But you and Charlie felt a huge momen- tum behind this new album, right? JK: We did. There had been a great momen- tum building up, bit by bit, from the last decade. Playing, getting our confidence back, and from that getting our mojo back. And we started making the band the most important thing in life again, which is not easy to do. I mean, you do that when you're 18 because that's the only thing IN your life. But when you're older, and you've been around the block, and nobody buys records anymore anyway, so who cares? But we were like, no, no -- if we're gonna do it, we've really gotta give it our best shot and roll up our sleeves Simple Minds, 2018 10•2018 iron, he's a professor from Dublin, and the one thing our place has is the best view of Mt. Etna you could ever see. So I go up to him, and he says to me, "Now there's one thing I want to ask you - where would we find Mt. Etna?" And I said, "See that big witch's hat thing right there in front of you? Uhh, that's it." I mean, where the fuck did you think it was? It's not like we've got twelve of them! Should we put a sign on it like in Hollywood saying 'Mt. Etna'? and really play out, and suddenly it feels like the world's more on your side again.
