JK : Actually , they were good-natured problems , or more innocent than mistakes . I had a partner , to begin with , great guy - still is a great guy . But eventually he bailed , and he had all the local contacts . So when he bailed , it was kinda tough . I was on the road and all that , so getting people you could trust and rely on ? It was kinda scary . And also , hotels by their nature , guests come for a week or maybe two weeks for
their holidays . And that ' s a big investment , abig responsibility -- they look forward to their holidays the whole year , and you ' ve got to hope that they get what they were looking for . So I was out of my depth . But looking back on it , I don ' t think we were any more out of our depth than anyone who takes on a new venture . Even the pros get it wrong sometimes . So it was a challenge I wanted to do . And this is our 15th year , and unbelievably it ' s wiped its face , it ' s come good . So there we go . It ' s done and dusted . We have 29 rooms , and we ' re about to add another . And the view is just cosmic . I ' ve traveled the world and been some amazing places , but when you ' re looking at Mt Etna , it ' s just amazing . Plus it throws all this ash into the air , which in turn fertilizes everything . I mean , that used to be the basket of the Roman empire , so you ' ve got all that history , as well , and that ' s going back to the Greek , never mind the Romans . It ' s cosmic .

IE : You ever talk to guests there who don ' t recognize you ? JK : Absolutely . I have an apartment not so far away , so I go over several times a week for lunch , because , why not ? And we do get a lot of people who stay at the place because of the band . So it ' s nice to see them and all that . But you ' re sitting there , and you get into a chat with people , travelers from all over the world . And I ' m more
10 • 2018 interested in their stories than they are mine . IE : If you ' re not open to listening in a conversation , you can miss some incredible stories . JK : Well , that ' s it , isn ' t it ? My life has always been about travels . Charlie and I -- before we were even Simple Minds -- we used to go hitchhiking . And there was a point in 1975 -- and by that age , we were just less than 16 --and we ' d hitchhike to London . And my friend sent me a letter saying , " You ' ve got to come to London and see this thing called punk rock -- it ' s called The Sex Pistols , and it plays in a pub in Kilburn ." And they were playing in two weeks ' time , which was a holiday from school . So by this time , Charlie and I were becoming seasoned hitchhikers - which no one does anymore - and on the way down there , the last lift was this truck driver , and we asked him where he was going on this Friday night , and he said , " I ' m going to Paris on Sunday .
