Studio One Dub Vol. 2( Soul Jazz) Studio One Dub 2 brings together some of the finest dubs from the legendary Studio One Records, Kingston, Jamaica. Dub music was created by a generation of brilliant recording studio engineers in Jamaica. Most of the original Studio One dub albums released during the 1970s were mixed by Coxsone Dodd himself, using the moniker " Dub Specialist ", although many talented engineers worked the board at the Brentford Road studio over the years( including Sylvan Morris, Syd Bucknor, and Overton " Scientist " Brown). Throughout the 1970s, these mixes became more sophisticated and atmospheric. The cuts here demonstrate that Studio One ' s contribution to the innovative musical form of dub was substantial and go straight to the head of listeners who feel that the only centers for dub were studios such as King Tubby ' s, Lee Perry ' s Black Ark, Channel One, or Joe Gibbs’. This compilation draws on tracks from this period in the 1970s, when dub was the cutting edge of Jamaican studio production. Most are dub-version flipsides of rare Jamaican 45s. Sleeve notes are by Michael E. Veal, celebrated author of Dub: Soundscapes and Shattered Songs in Jamaican Reggae.

EARTH, WIND & FIRE
Earth, Wind And Fire( Rhino) Earth, Wind & Fire ' s bold, genreblending 1971 debut showcases the band ' s early mix of funk, soul, jazz, and social consciousness, foreshadowing the innovative sound that would make them one of the decade ' s most influential groups. Larry Ridley of DownBeat, in a 5 / 5 stars review, declared, "( Maurice White) has assembled here a strong musical organization. They are a tight, well- knit instrumental and vocal group... The vocal voicings are somewhat reminiscent of the Fifth Dimension, but this is not to imply imitation, for Earth, Wind and Fire are just that... Any further critical analysis is unwarranted, and my only other comment at this point is go out and buy this record and keep your eyes and ears open to Earth, Wind and Fire."
NEW EDITION
Candy Girl( StreetWise) When Maurice Starr discovered a Roxbury, Massachusetts vocal group in the early ' 80s at a talent show at Dorchester’ s storied Strand Theater, he saw the second coming of the Jackson 5. The boys didn’ t win the competition( they came in second), but they did win a deal with Starr and Streetwise Records. Starr came up with the name New Edition( as in a new edition of the Jackson 5) and started recording with the boys the day after the talent show at The Strand.
